RM95 brought up one of my favorite topics, dive bars. What are some of y'alls favorites? My all-time favorite was the Aquarium, rest its soul, until it was torn down. Big fan of the Kay’s lounge also like Warrens, although I rarely go there. Cecil’s is another good one. ------------------
It was Rocketman Tex I believe who brought it up, but no matter...... Anyway, I love a good dive bar...Maggie Mae's was one of my favorites in Austin. I heard they moved it, and the old old one is gone. ------------------ There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness."
My favorites in Houston are: Kay's Silky's Warren's Lola's West Alabama Icehouse Local Charm Club ------------------ "Blues is a Healer" --John Lee Hooker
Would Rud's be considered a dive bar? ------------------ Everything you do, effects everything that is.
Lola's... great dive bar rH ------------------ Homecourt will always be 'The Summit' to me!! Until we move downtown!! The Psychedelic Groove House of Rockets Basketball Love! Come and chat with us on game nights in CC.net chat!
Oh, you mean...LOW LIFES?! Theres also "The Tall Texan" off of Main. $1.50 Shiner Bock in an iced fishbowl! ------------------ Whatever you want to do, you have to do something else first.
Pic-n-Pac-n-Barfed there once! ------------------ Whatever you want to do, you have to do something else first.
I would consider it as one. And it's a good one. ------------------ "Blues is a Healer" --John Lee Hooker
Anyone remember The Island close to DT (288 & 59). One pool table didn't have any felt. The band (I think it was the Dead Kennedys (sp), but it was 81-82 so I don't remember), broke up their equipment and threw it at us because we weren't throwing enough half empty beer cans and lit cigarette butts. I thought they were mad because some people were doing that - just call me a clueless punk. In between ducks, I kept thinking, "How can a band break up their equipment and make a living?" ------------------
I love the West Alabama Icehouse. Hell, we've probably met. I haven't been in about a month or so. I used to frequent that place a bit, and I've been itching to go back. ------------------ "We got f*cking smashed every day. And then when we came here to Beverly Hills, we had drugs, we had chicks, we had orgies. I thought I'd died and gone to f*cking Rome" ---Ozzy Osbourne, on the early days of Black Sabbath
I didn't know The Aquarium was gone! (When, I was seventeen, I drank some very good beer... I drank some very good beer, I purchased, with a fake I.D.... My name was Brian McGee... I went home listening to Queen... When I was seventeen.) Seriously, my favorite dive bar is The Marquis II, on Kirby and Bissonnet. Every playoff year, we go there and watch The Rockets. Also, Tuesday night Tea's kick a$$! Three of those, and you're on the floor! ------------------ "I never did like that "Dr. Stupid""-Monty Burns
The Marquis II is the worst. I have never visited that establishment without a member of my party vomiting from too many LITs. How about Cecil's? It's dive-ier than Rudz. [This message has been edited by jamcracker (edited March 02, 2001).]
La Carafe is a great dive but I haven't been there in a long time (I don't know if it's still around either). Nowadays I frequent Rudz the most. I almost forgot about Local Charm. I used to spend a lot of time there when I was going to UH. My college days are a little foggy. Lola's is OK. Never been too impressed with the place. I remember lots of fun (illicit) stuff going on out on the back patio though. The most entertainment I ever had at Lola's was a raid. A bunch of undercover cops that had been hanging around the place all night started shouting for everyone to get down on the ground as uniformed officers came rushing in. They were busting under age drinkers and the bartenders who served them, as well as pot smokers on the patio. I had nothing to worry about except that I was on my way to pee when they did this. My bladder just about ruptured before it was all over. Cecil's rings a bell. I must have gotten smashed at the place, I can't even remember where it is. ------------------
Man! I wish I could remember the name of the beer bar that was on campus of Rice. Very laid back atmosphere. Good chess games too! Ah Lola's, right down the street from Emo's. Now that was a pretty good bar in the day! Have a great weekend folks! ------------------ Everything you do, effects everything that is. "I wish I could remember the name of the beer bar that was on campus of Rice. " Valhalla. I can't believe I forgot about it. I worked at Mudd Computer Lab one summer, and when I got off work I had the option of driving home, or walking 1/2 a block for a 60 cent beer and a bridge game. I ended up playing bridge and drinking 60 cent Pearl and eating cheap sandwiches until 9 or 10 every night that summer.
You mean Valhalla? Or spelt somfin like that? ------------------ Whatever you want to do, you have to do something else first.
Valhalla!!! Thas it boys! If you was there around '89-'91, we probably ran into each other. I was working pretty steady at Main Street Theater at that time, and would usually end up there 2 or 3 times a week! ------------------ Everything you do, effects everything that is.
Anybody here remember "The Ship's Wheel" down in El Lago? What a dive, yet I spent many a day and night there. Then head over to Tulie's to dance, then eat at Eberado's after the bars close. Who knows what a "special tea" is? ------------------ Behad Sergeant at Arms of the Clutch BBS
