Dissecting Morey's Brain: Trade For Millsap Should Be First Option

Even though I wanted a perimeter player (Thad Young, etc), I think that Millsap gives us the best possible value-oriented trade and the most flexibility.

    1) Great contract.
Millsap has an outstanding value-based contract at $9 million per year that ends in 2015. If we do decide to go for the 2015 FA class, we have the option to do so.

    2) We'll know if we need that "3rd star" or if Parsons + Millsap are good enough.
By getting Millsap with 50+ games to go will give us a great idea about our team and what to do with Chandler Parsons. Currently, we don't know if this team with Millsap will be good enough to win a championship. If we go deep in the playoffs with our core group, Morey may opt to sign Parsons THIS SUMMER. It may make sense since he'll be a restricted free agent. If we opt to sign him in 2015, he is un-restricted and can walk for nothing. However, if we don't seem to be contenders, we can let everyone's contracts play out, or look for deals next year. Lin and Millsap will both be expiring contracts.

    3) Test the stretch 4 theory.
Millsap has 3 point range and can be our "stretch 4", with average to above average defense.

    4) Millsap's advanced stats are great.
Millsap is also a smart player that has "off the charts" advanced stats. This has been posted here at length, so I won't bother.

    5) Terrence Jones will still play, and play a lot.
Terrence Jones will still get plenty of minutes at PF or C. Even though he won't start anymore, he'll still rack up 25-30 minutes a game. At 6'9 and 250+ lbs, Jones can play C against many teams. When we go small, we can plug in Millsap at the 4 and Jones at the 5. This will also give Terrence a chance to work on his post up game against weaker opponents.

    6) Paul Millsap is in his prime now and for the next few years.
Paul Millsap is 28 years old. We are hoping to be championship contenders for the next few years. If Millsap works out, he'll be in his prime when we make our run.

Sighh... Milsap is OK, but he's small. Size matters in the NBA.
I really wish Omer wasn't such a doofus and stayed with us. With 6-9" Howard and 6-7" Milsap it is going to be tough to compete. You have some big frontcourts in the West, that we'll likely face in the playoffs:

    LMA-Lopez
    Duncan-Splitter
    Griffin-DAJ
    Gasol-ZBo, etc...
Heck, even the small ball D'Antony lakers can put Gasol/Hill/Kaman out there...

Howard is 6'9? Millsap is 6'7? When did they shrink?

7"2 or 7"1 winspan. Just like Terrence Jones.

Lol thats their heights without shoes, 6'9.5 for howard and 6'7.25 for Milsap.

That doesn't matter because 1 all the other bigs he listed are also 1-2 inches under listed heights and 2 There is much more to size them pure height, Howard and Milsap would be a massive front court with both being 260+ athletic and having huge wingspans.

Just watching some Millsap highlights from this season and WOW, didn't realize he had dunks like these in him:

    http://www.nba.com/video/channels/top_plays/2013/11/23/20131123-dunk-of-the-night.nba

    http://www.nba.com/video/channels/top_plays/2013/12/04/20131204-play-of-the-day.nba

And has range out to half court - http://www.nba.com/video/games/hawks/2013/12/06/0021300282-cle-atl-play4.nba

Looks to me like he has kind of a David West / Luis Scola kind of game. Doesn't rely on athleticism and is crafty around the rim, can shoot outside and brings some toughness. Would be a solid addition off the bench and finishing in the 4th quarter.

Big Milsap fan, and think he would be our best option if we are looking to add the best available player. But he doesn't solve our perimeter D problem and he doesn't solve our backup center problem.

It will be very interesting to see what Morey does. Will he choose the quality of the asset over on the court need? Are they mutually exclusive?

I think a wing defender and backup C could be either had via free agency, Europe or Dleague.

We don't need Millsap, we need a more defensive player.

If Hawes and a first are out of the picture, I'd offer both Asik and Jones for Millsap. Hell, I'd even toss in a second. It really is that important that the player 1. fills a need, 2. can contribute immediately, 3. represents a true upgrade, and 4. has a one or two year contract. Put me in the win now camp. If you can chase Love, great, but don't trade for youngsters just because you think Minny will find them more valuable than veterans.

I like Millsap, but I just wouldn't throw in Jones. Morey can throw in whatever else for all I care, just not any of our core players. I believe Jones is worth at least a top 10 pick in a normal draft. Fans may even be happy if they got a player of similar ability in this draft in the top 10. Just too much potential to give up along with Asik.

I love everything else you said about Millsap, but I'd refuse to give up Jones.

Wow, such a new thought. I guess this must have slipped Morey's mind. Wonder if its too late for Morey to call Ferry and tell him he's taking Millsap off of their hands (and assume Ferry will say "Sure Daryl... here ya go... my pleasure").

Every player going in the top 10 this year is already a better basketball player then Terrence Jones.

I get the feeling there's a little MOF vs JOF thing going on here. People who still think Motiejunas is going to be great want to throw Jones in so Motie can be the backup 4 and 5, and the people who think Jones has already won the race between the two are fine with tossing Motie away.

People don't really know how good millsap is real funny. Millsap is like a semi superstar. As fat as PFs go hes like top five. He would be perfect for our team. He's a junk man and he hustles. N actually a underrated defender. Although he's not the tallest he's very mobile even had the ability to guard Lebron sorta. Millsap would turn our team into beast mode. I guess millsap hasent got the recognition he deserves latley he's pretty elite and I just wanna laugh when people doubt him or just say he's ok lmao. Then the same people wSnt to talk about spencer hawes trades over millsap lmao..
