Trump sits, talks through song lowering the flag at military base amid NFL anthem controversy http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/t...e-amid-nfl-anthem-controversy/article/2637296 President Trump sat and talked through the nightly playing of "Retreat" as the American flag was lowered on a Pennsylvania Air National Guard base during his interview with Sean Hannity. Trump, who has been criticizing NFL players who kneel through the national anthem to protest racism, seemed caught off-guard by loudspeakers playing "Retreat." The song is played every night at military bases to signal the American flag being lowered and the end of the official duty day. Trump not only does not stand or place his hand over his heart, but instead talks through the song and assumes it's being played to honor him or Hannity. People watching the rally can be seen standing for the song in the background of Trump's interview, but Trump seems to not know what the song means. "Are they playing that for you or for me?" Trump joked to Hannity. "They're playing that in honor of his ratings. He's beating everybody." Trump's ignorance of an American military tradition comes after weeks of railing against NFL players for "disrespecting the flag" for kneeling during the national anthem. The kneeling players are protesting racism and police brutality by taking a knee during the anthem played before games. Trump last tweeted about the anthem protests Wednesday, demanding NFL players "RESPECT OUR COUNTRY." This came across my time line So I thought I would see what the group says Rocket River http://taskandpurpose.com/president-trump-no-idea-evening-colors-started/
Yeah...I'll give him a pass on the disrespectful part, but who schedules his stuff? Why do things like this happen to him? Who lets him give a speech where he sends California his 'warmest' regards?
How many civilians even know about reveille and retreat let alone what they are supposed to do during it? I'm thinking it's ignorance more so than disrespect.....but if he knew better then it would be disrespectful. Also, now that I look at it, isn't he indoors? Saluting reveille and retreat is really only something you do outdoors.....and it's why you'll see garbage ass butter bars run indoors if they hear it start playing.
Yes, POTUS should always stand. Also they should never sleep as it's a sign of weakness but when they do it should be standing up too.
Lame butthurts grasping for something. If somebody walks by playing America The Beautiful on their cell phone should Trump stop an interview and stand?
I personally don’t care because I know he’s too dumb to know better, but if this was a liberal of any kind, much less a liberal president .... holy mother of God... the world would be ending. We all remember the outrage when Obama saluted a marine walking off a plane with a coffee cup in his hand. You’d think he just bragged about sexual assault or something.
I don't give a **** about customs and curtosies. I do give a **** when a president lambasts private employers for their employees not abiding by them and then does exactly what he lambasts private businesses for. Ya, that's called hypocrisy. Is there anyone on this message board that actually was naive enough to believe that Trump's tirade on the NFL stems from his love of country rather than pandering to idiots?
If he was wearing an American flag lapel pin, then no problem. No disrespectful, because disrespect requires intent, and intent requires knowledge. Maybe it's a sort of 'respect negligence' that he hasn't taken the steps necessary to educate himself about all the various military customs he's supposed to show respect for so he knows the right way to act. On this one though, in my own ignorance of military custom, I don't know what the expectation should be on how Trump should have acted. Should he have stopped what he was doing? Should he have altered his schedule so he wouldn't have been engaged at that moment? Or should he have just kept going like he did? He may be C-in-C but he is still a civilian after all. I don't even know the answer.
So true, but in all honesty, I doubt most of those upset with the NFL players are upset out of a deep love for the country. It's more like they are upset because their team/party is telling them they should be upset by the protest.
When you are on a military base and outdoors during reveille or retreat (when they raise or lower the flag each day), as a civilian you are supposed to stand with your hand over your heart for the duration of the bugle call. On some bases, if you are in your car, you are supposed to stop and get out. If you are indoors, you generally don't have to do anything and probably won't even hear it, but if you are indoors and heart it, you should stop what you are doing till it's over.....but basically no one ever does. Trump was inside a hangar during the call, so technically he wouldn't have to do anything....but the doors were open and he heard the bugle call so a hard ass about that kind of thing would have some room to b**** about it, but it's pretty lame especially given that he clearly didn't know what it was. I'd imagine his reaction would have been very different if it was a bit later on and they were playing taps instead of retreat. Also I imagine if it was a situation more like this then it would have looked different.
I don't care whether Trump sits kneels or stands - he has no respect for this country or its traditions - that much is clear. But if you think someone playing America the beautiful on their cell phone is the same thing as a military base lowering the flag at the end of the day, then you are as stupid and clueless as Trump.
