So, I was playing slowpitch softball for the first time in eight years the other day. My first time up, I strike out, so I'm determined as hell to make contact in my second at bat. I get up to the plate, take a couple of balls, then haul back and blast a double up the third base line. I must have had pretty bad swinging form, though, because when I made contact, I felt my left shoulder pop out of joint, then immediately pop back in. It felt pretty bad, and I was scared, but I didn't really let on; too excited about getting on base, I guess. Anyway, I get driven home and then my next time up at bat I make contact and it happens again! I feel my shoulder come apart, then go right back in a second later. The second time it happened was a lot more painful, but I grit my teeth and finish the game, never even mentioning to anyone else what happened. When I get home, I bend my arm back, trying to duplicate the motion and I get a sharp, jarring pain which felt like my shoulder was going to come apart again. Anyway, I go to the doctor and she gets me to rise my arm up, testing the motion of the shoulder, and she says that I have full motion, so I should be okay in about 3 days. It only really hurts if I move it a certain way, and she says that is probably due to ligament damage. It's currently 5 days later and it still hurts pretty bad when I move it a certain way. I have never had this type of injury before and am wondering if anyone here has ever dislocated or partially dislocated their shoulder. Did you pop it completely out of joint and have to get someone to forcibly put it back in place, or did it go back on its own like mine? How long did it take to recover? Did you get a complete recovery, or does it still hurt when you bend it a certain way, or do you have limited motion now because of the injury? I hate this injury. I'd much rather have a knee or ankle injury than a busted up shoulder. PS: After analyzing my swing, I realized that I hurt myself because I was swinging mostly with my left arm (I bat right-handed), like the way one is supposed to pull with their left arm while swinging a golf-club. This caused the arm to "jam" back while the rest of my body kept rotating around. Definite bad form on my part.
man, i feel for you! i separated my shoulder playing tackle football with some friends 3 years ago! I was diving over a would-be tackler and landed on my right shoulder... I couldn't get up because i had immediate searing pain in that shoulder... all of my friends told me to shake it off, but i knew something was seriously wrong b/c i couldn't even move it... i sat there for five minutes while my friends discussed what could be wrong after intense questioning (hey, they were all pre-med students!)... 15 minutes later, up strolls one of our friends, who was late for the game... he looks at me on the ground and yells "WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOUR ARM... OH MY GOD!" I was scared after that... apparently my arm was visibly dangling outside the socket, but everyone was too scared to tell me... i ended up going to the emergency room (with my friends holding my arm in the only position it felt semi-comfortable, b/c i couldn't hold it up on my own since it was out of the socket)... the doctor puts me under and 10 minutes later its back to normal... apparently while i was asleep he swung my arm in every single motion until it popped back into place... i was stuck wearing a cast for 2 weeks after that... i had to take final exams with my left hand (writing theormes left handed is not easy!) the doctor told me i would have side effects for the rest of my life... whenever i work out at the gym or play basketball, my shoulder many times pops in and out of the socket (b/c the ligaments were ripped and would never permanently heal)... its a pain to deal with, but i've gotten used to it.
eww, nasty fade. I get sharp pains in my arms when I do certain things, like reach a certain way, or shoot a basketball, or go up for a rebound. Pretty constant and painful, but I've gotten used to it now. nothing like what you described tho. take a time out and play more video games man.
i played foot ball freshman year of high school... i broke my finger, or dislocated it on this kids shoulder pads during practice... imagine an 'l' as representing my finger before the incident. imane an 'r' as my finger after the incident. my finger before: l my finger after: r i got scared and went to my coach and he bent it back sort of to wear it looked like an '(' my finger after coach bent it back as best he could:. ( the next day the kid i busted my finger on failed off the team. i played only one season. a year later i got surgery on it because it was always touching my other fingers awkwardly and getting on nerves now i just have a scar, and a meaningless memory to share with you all. sorry about your mess fadeaway.
Fade, the problem with shoulder dislocation is the LENGTH OF TIME the shoulder is dislocated, as this is when the shoulder ligaments (and cartlidge and tendons) get stretched or even torn. My first guess is you should just need some exercises to increase the strength in your shoulder (there is obviously some weakness there), using dumbells and probably in combination with some stretching. let me check my injury books when i get home tonight and i will email you some more details. Smeg PS even with the injury you probably still could have beaten Berkman yesty.
yeah must be severe pain Crisco, didn't seem to stop you shooting in the pics in have seen..... BLACKHOLE!!!
What about cases where you can pop your arm out of its socket without pain? Is this a potential problem? I have been able to do this for years with my left arm, but not my right.
I've been lifting weights for a while now. I'm ticked off that I have to stop because of this stupid injury. Man, if I don't get a full and complete recovery from this, I'm going to jump off a cliff.
