I moved into a new apartment. Just now getting around to getting a TV. Cable is really expensive here. I looked and the Dish network is actually pretty cheap. Only 40 bucks a month for what I need (HD +
    standard)

Any caveats? Is Dish network not as good as directTV or cable? i've never had dish before.

Dish and Direct are pretty much the same.

one thing you need to know....ask those here who have a satellite how they performed when the squall line came thru during the Rockets game the other night.

Those of us with cable never lost signal....betcha the Direct/Dish subscribers cant say the same.

only real diff. b/t it and directv is that you can't get NFL sunday ticket.

Other than that, it compares very favorably overall w/ the DVR receiever, and the cheap lineup options.

And no 2K... I didn't lose the signal. (and, even if I did... it has never gone out for more than 2 minutes... and that's w/ the heaviest of storms).

well... dish network is about 15 bucks a week cheaper than cable here, while that's not a lot, over the long term it adds up.

also, i don't have time to watch TV that much.

so dish network works right? some of you have it and it's okay?

i guess the next question is. i want to spend 1000 buck on a tv (a 3000 dollar plasma or LCD just can't be justified based on how little time i'd have to watch it).

so rear-projection HDTV? or 35 inch tube HDTV?

I would probably try and find a good deal on a RP set. With the tube set you will probably get a little sharper image but the problem is its too small.

In my opinion the only drawback of a tube RPTV is the bulk and weight. It will be a pain every time you move.

You may want to check out this site. It has a lot of great info on HD sets.

We had Dish and ditched it for cable. It is a few bucks more, but we can get Roadrunner for $10 less per month with the cable than without and it is SO much better than standard DSL, IMO. That alone is worth it.

I have DirecTV, never had Dish Network but my in-laws did and it seemed fine. I will never go back to cable. The picture quality just looks a lot better in my opinion. If you're going to spend a lot of money on a nice setup, then personally I would get the service that offers the best quality picture. I have a 51 inch Sony rear-projection wide screen HDTV and it looks awesome.

As for outages during storms, it's not nearly as bad as people would lead you to believe. I've had DirecTV for the past 2 years, and I've lost picture maybe 4 or 5 times during that span. Each time it's never been for more than 5 minutes. When it comes to DirecTV vs Dish Network, like someone mentioned earlier you can't get NFL Sunday Ticket with Dish. I subscribe to that, so that's basically why I chose DirecTV. I think Dish is a little cheaper so I would go with that if you don't care about the NFL package.

I still have roadrunner, which uses time warners lines. We signed up through earthlink though, so it's only $39/month. I've actually been considering getting my phone service through them as well.

yeah i would definitely be getting cable if the combo package applied (which it does, but my company pays for cable internet, and in the bundle package the cable TV stays the same and the cable internet goes down)

so the rear projection set you have has good picture? that's good. i hear some people say that it's too dim or whatever.

for 1000-1200 bucks, the biggest TV you can get is definitely the Rear Projection.
