Hey guys, I'm moving soon and the new place cannot get digital cable. I'm going to have to get a mini-dish. For anyone out there that has had experience with either one of these services, can you please recommend one to me?

I've had DTV for almost 6 years. Almost zero problems.

Most of the Dish Network people I know aren't able to still see what's playing on tv when they have the guide up (satellite owners hopefully know what I'm talking about). I hate that.

Dish offers unparalleled access to international channels that Direct doesnt. Direct does have those season ticket sports packages though.

    Other than that theyre equal.

Actually, depending on the receiver, you can see the program when the guide is up.

I have had Dish for 3 years and love it.

The coolest freatures are a) The integrated TIVO into the receiver and b) The caller ID function (when someone calls, their phone # pops up on your TV screen).

However, as many have said, I do not think there is much difference in the two.

Who, Dish comes with Tivo? Is it free or an extra monthly charge?

I had DirecTV for over 4 years, no problem except during the rain. Otherwise, great service, good picture and tons of channels. I prefer DTV over Dish...

There is no extra monthly charge for it. In fact, when I signed up, I did a 2 year contract and got the TIVO receiver free. I bought an extra one for the bedroom a few months ago for about $299 (you can get them on Ebay cheaper though).

I may have to switch one of these days. I really like Tivo. Not sure if I would take it over NBA Ticket, that'll be a tough choice.

Technically the Dish Network digital video recorder is not a TiVO branded digital video recorder.

DirecTV has a branded TiVO receiver available.

    Dish has NBA Ticket now.

Mrpaige is right though. Dish Network refers to their unit as a PVR (personal video recorder??). Its basically the same as TIVO though. In fact, I think the DN one is better because it is integrated into the satellite receiver and thus, you only have one remote. The Dish PVR has every function that the TIVO has to my knowledge.

Yeah, a friend of mine has the Dish PVR, and it works great. I would certainly recommend.

But the DirecTV/TiVO one is integrated, as well, but I don't know anybody who has one of those.

I've had DirecTv for the last two years and have never really had any problems. As other people have pointed out, the fact that DirecTV subscribers can get NFL Sunday Ticket, and Dish can't, is what made me choose DTV.

If you do end up getting DirectTV, make sure you get the Direct Tivo one. You get the satellite reciever plus a bona-fide Tivo built in and the Tivo records digitally direct from the satalite signal - no digital to analougue and then back again. Plus it has two receivers built in so you can watch one program while you record another.

Also, make sure you get a duel LNB dish so you can hook up two receivers if you ever decide to.

Another thing to look into (but I don't know much about it) is that extra wide dish that allows you to pick up two satellites. DirectTV broadcasts some stations on the other satellite but I'm pretty sure it's mostly international (spanish language?) stuff and local stations for other markets that you may not be interested in. The "main" satellite has the local Houston stations (I assume you're in Houston) so you'd be okay with just a "normal" dish.
