Ants eat away patient’s eye in Indian hospital
Nurses ignored cries of pain, saying it was normal after operation

KOLKATA, India - A woman receiving treatment for diabetes at a state-run hospital in eastern India lost one of her eyes after ants nibbled away at it, officials said on Tuesday.

The patient recovering from a post-surgery infection shrieked for help as the ants attacked her on Sunday night, but nurses told her it was normal to feel pain from the infection.

On Monday, the patient’s family saw a gaping hole with swarming ants in it when they lifted the bandage on her left eye.

Authorities of the Sambhunath Hospital in Kolkata said they were probing the incident.

“It’s not uncommon for ants to attack diabetic patients. We have set up a committee to investigate the unfortunate incident,” hospital superintendent A. Adhikary said.

Scampering rats and stray cats and dogs sharing bed space with patients are not uncommon sights at India’s overcrowded state-run hospitals that are used by millions of poor and middle-class people.

After having the ants removed, the patient was surprisingly upbeat. She optimistically stated, "Yes, I'm in an Indian hospital that is filled with rats, stray cats, and dogs. I am being treated for diabetes, and one of my eyes has been eaten away by ants. And that's a pretty miserable experience. But my brother has things much worse. He's married."

in that same hospital, 2 months ago a man was scheduled for the amputation of his left leg (previously diagnosed as unsalvageable.

following the surgery, the doctor spoke to the amputee for the 1st time

"Sir, we hve good news & bad news" said the Doc

"What's the bad news?" replied the amputee

"Well, ahem....., ahem......, we've amputated the wrong leg...... but the good news is your other leg is getting better!"

No **** !!! It seems like I read stories all the time about snakes or other weird things eating humans or body parts, or abnormal watermelon-sized growths like goiters, cysts, and stuff like that..... All sorts of disgusting crap going on over there.

I don't know why it's doing "http://" twice on the link, but take it out and it should work. There aren't pictures or anything, so you're not missing much.

Just another story to support my gut instinct of never going on a vacation to India.

The sad part is that the other end of the health spectrum is just as good as this one is crap...

Ive known some people in America who wait to get their checkups and stuff in india beause it is A. Cheaper, for jst as good service
    and
    B. they get someone who speaks their language...

that said, my great gramma passed away in an indian hospital a few years ago because the doctors perforated(put a hole) in her esophagus(food pipe) while trying to get an air pipe or a food pipe in her lungs/stomach... not sure...

she was really old, so we didnt sue the hospital or anything, because she was pretty much on life support and that perforation could have happened even without the doctor error...

something like that, I dont really remember... but ya, ive also seen them treat stitches over there(NOT FUN)
