Anyone watching shark week this week? I liked the episodes last night...i can't imagine myself fighting a shark to survive. it's crazy to think about! I just get at amazing things that sharks do. It's not a best idea to watch this because I am leaving for Cozumel/Playa Del Carmen next month. A bit scared to snorkel and swim!
agreed..if you have to promote something that much, it can't be good.. on a side note, seeing that other show "how did I survive" or something like episode on being stranded at sea after their boat sank while she saw her friends getting eatin by sharks definitely made me think twice about being in the water...
My oldest daughter who just got married at the end of June happily posted on her FaceBook page that this was her first "SharkWeek" with her new husband!
I scuba dive. One dive I did was a shark feed. We had a couple dozen 10-12ft Caribbean Reef Sharks swimming around us. It was pretty nuts, but got some awesome pictures.
Damn! Thanks for reminding me. I meant to set my DVR last week to record every episode. Know its fake but it looks pretty cool. Sorta: Spoiler
It's my first Shark week with the hubby as well! Wow, that is so insane, BigMAK. I'm so terrified to even try to scuba dive...the idea of not touching the bottom freaks me out in a vast ocean and looking up and seeing a boat scares the hell out of me. I freak out a bit when I snorkel but I get over it.
Being a swimmer/water polo player, I've spent the greater part of my life in the water. The swimming pool is obviously way different than the ocean, but the comfort I have in the water is the same no matter how deep. However, on this dive, looking over the boat and seeing around 10 sharks circling us was an odd feeling. The dive master told us to keep our hands and finger tucked in because the sharks may think we are trying to feed them and will take an arm off. When they opened the container with all the dead fish, the number of sharks easily trippled in less than 2 minutes.
1. How the hell do you get back up? It seems the motions of swimming would be attractive to such a predatory animal. 2. Do they have any type of protection down there just in case, like a spear gun?
It's when you get discounts at Japanese restaurants for Shark Fin soup. A month from now is Whale Week. During that week you get discounts on whale steaks.
1. You swim back up. The only important thing you learn while getting certified to dive is not to swim up too fast (or your lungs will pop). So when you come up, it's not in a mad rush or anything, it's nice a slow. 2. Nothing. The feeders wear chainmail sleeves since they sharks will bite them, but nothing for us. I did have my 3" dive knife, although I think that probably would have just pissed it off worse. These sharks arnt know to be extremly aggressive. Yeah, any shark is able to rip your arm off, but these sharks are use to being fed by divers and are use to being around people. Honestly, there were only 2 scary parts. One was looking over the boat and seeing them circling us. The other is when we came up to the surface and were floating by the boat waiting to get on. Since our heads were above water, you couldn't see the shakrs. Knowning a shark is below you but not being able to see it is a weird feeling.
I would be sooo freaked out! I guess be glad they weren't bull sharks..it seems like they are most aggressive sharks next to Great White...maybe I could be wrong.
When you swim with sharks like in the Caribbean or Cozumel, you are generally dealing with reef sharks, which aren't that dangerous. Once you encounter a shark while diving, your fear of sharks will drop a lot. An 6-8 foot reef shark isn't really that big, and it can't bite you in half or anything. However, swimming with great whites is a completely different ball game and is something I would never do (without a cage).
frankly, i've found these shark shows boring. i'd rather a week dedicated to reptiles, especially snakes.
Shark Week is overrated Everybody just overeacts and pretends to love shark week when they post "SHARK WEEK" as their facebook status. I mean really? They have shark documentaries all throughout the year, not to mention it really isn't that interesting to watch after the first hour.
