My girlfriend had a tire blow out near a gas station that I feel is trying to take her money....

Here's the facts on her car 1992 Pontiac Bonneville...

They want to charge $131 for a new tire, and $250 for a used Pontiac Rim... I'm crying highway robbery on this one...and I think I'm right...

I went to discounttiredirect.com and found tires for her size for around $60 and a steel wheel replacement for the rim for $45...and they will send it to her doorstep and I can perform the change out procedure....My question is...have any of you ever used discount tire direct? We don't live close enough to a Discount Tire to have them do it so this is pretty much our only option. Do you get quality? She doesn't care about looks because she's going to sell the car in 6 months anyway and changing a tire is one of those car things I can actually do

I got two new tires from Discount a few weeks ago and they seem like a well run operation. Quality tires, good service, maybe a few unneeded warranty features that they push on you a little too hard to raise the bill, but otherwise I was very happy.

I ordered my rims from them. Very fast shipping. Good quality.
I will also be ordering tires from them next time I need them.

    Go for it.

    Interesting web site!

But I have to ask a question:

A search returned 17 different tire brands/models for my car, ranging in price from $53 to $136. How do I go about choosing a tire?

I buy all of my tires from them (since I can mount and balance my own tires in my garage thanks to my raid of an auction of the equipment of a out-of-business tire store) and I've never had anything but a positive results. I'd go for it.

    twh,

whats the brand and size of your tire??

is the wheel steel or alloy???

$250 for a used Pontiac rim is a rip off. way too high!!!

And what about stiping and balancing? How do you put 'em on? What about a warranty?

They come balanced and ready to go, I'm just gonna use the jack and put the suckers on myself, I figure the lugnuts should match up with the ones she already has... they do offer an installation kit...or most full service garages will put them on for 20 bucks a tire or so...luckily I only need one and can do it myself...

I've used Discount Tire stores, which I don't think are affiliated.

I think they're awesome. They've even fixed flats on my tires FOR FREE, and drop what they're doing to fix them. At Firestone, they would not only charge, but I'd have to leave my car.

No I think they are affiliated because that's what I was looking for and their links are from the same website. I don't think I've ever been as pleased with a company as I have been by Discount Tire.

    twhy,

I just contacted my tire/wheel person, and they said that wheel should only be going for $100-$125.

Might want to try and negotiate it down.

I got the steel wheel for 45 bucks...and yokahama tire for 64 with a 25 dollar rebate. Deal of the Century.

Oh. I thought you said earlier they wanted $250 for the rim, so I had assumed it was alloy.

That was at the gas station in Bethesda, MD, the one with the leather couch and servicemen with ties.
