Disabled player Exception for trade?

Last year when Yao went out we used the disabled player exception to acquire Trevor Ariza. Well unfortunately this year it happened after the offseason, and there is no one worth the almost 6 million dollars we will have available….except via trade?
Yes we can use the exception in a trade.

Just researching and found this article proving it:
    http://www.oregonlive.com/blazers/index.ssf/2010/12/nba_grants_trail_blazers_a_dis.html
Blazers talk about using Odens exception in a trade.

I think this is all but a done deal. The Twill trade makes more sense now, knowing we are going with youth. We also now have more tradable assets.

    PRIME TRADE TARGET: (Gortat?)
I am assuming that most logical choice in this scenario is Gortat. As magic need good cheap players and salary relief as they are paying a great deal in luxury tax. We could send a draft pick and Budinger to magic for Gortat. Of course no telling who they would want…Hill, lee, ish…I don’t know. But we can eat virtually his entire contract, and offer solid rotation caliber players at minimal salary obligations. We could also trade for Cousins, but the financial aid is not as crucial in a deal with the kings.

Here’s a little info on the disabled player exception.

"Disabled Player Exception: Allows a team that is over the cap to acquire a replacement for a disabled player who will be out for either the remainder of that season (for in-season injuries/deaths) or the next season (if the disability occurs during the offseason). The maximum salary of the replacement player is either 50% of the injured player's salary, or the average salary, whichever is less. This exception requires an NBA-designated doctor to verify the extent of the injury.

Note that while teams can often use one exception to sign multiple players, they cannot use a combination of exceptions to sign a single player."

Les isn't going to spend money right now.

Morey will advise him to ride this season out and wait for the new CBA.

I think Gortat would make sense, Rox wanted him before and Ariza's T/E matches exactly, if they wish to go that route.

Magic also need another scorer, I'd look at moving Martin for Gortat and another piece they could offer.

So would that still count towards the lux tax? If not then I can see them signing someone..

Ariza's TE already works for Gortat. Magic need a slasher, someone who will actually go the hole; someone who will do some dirty work. Martin is a nice player but not a good fir for them IMHO.

Well I am not for sure on this, but I believe with a disabled exception or if Yao goes in retirement we get cap relief with that already.

Butk the exception is as the title implies it is an exception to the rules that will not count against the luxury tax.

Yep, sure was, Martin was brought here to play with Yao and sadly we'll never see it. Martin can obviously play without him but it's time to move on, we have no legitimate center and Gortat will fill that role. It wouldn't be Martin for Gortat straight up, they would have to add something else but I would consider it.

Other than Howard, there's nobody else on the Magic that would make this team better, esp. if we're giving up Martin.

I guess I am higher on Gortat then most, I think the guy could be a 15-10 guy given the minutes and be a shot blocker.

Is that why the Magic went to the finals in 09 and made it to the ECF Finals in '10 ?

The Magic could really benefit from Shane Battier... He is perfect to play off a big man like Howard and could really help them defensively. Im very shocked that they haven't inquired about him anyways. I think Gortat could be had at the right price, but they still need a backup for him in return. I think Shane Battier, a first round pick, and Jordan Hill could be a good place to start negotiating.

You want to trade Martin for Gortat and Pietrus, a great backup 3? Man, that made me laugh.

I didn't say I'd trade Martin for him. I'm just saying the Magic have players that could help us.

Ya I think martin is the last thing magic are looking for...they are already paying jj redick like 7 million to do almost the same thing.

Right now Gortat is the only possibly available center out there. Its too early for Sacramento to give up on Cousins, and everyone else just isnt that good. The Magic will demand everything from the Rockets if they make a play for Gortat because they know the move is out of desperation. I still say its worth a shot though.

Good call, you could throw it in the assets jar, though I don't think it will be used.

Guys, at least read my full comment before quoting me. I said "if we're giving up Martin." Gortat and Pietrus are both decent players but not worth trading Martin over, and I've been very critical of Martin. If we can get a decent player for the TE then maybe.

Hasheem Thabeet as a salary Dump for Memphis would be a good move for us.

We need the rebounding and shot blocking
