http://sports.espn.go.com/dallas/nba/news/story?id=5339661 All-Star forward Dirk Nowitzki has sent in official notification to the Dallas Mavericks that he is opting out of the final year of his current contract, according to sources close to the situation. In addition to faxing the official opt-out letter, Nowitzki had to mail a signed copy Monday from Germany to ensure its arrival at the Mavericks' offices before Wednesday's opt-out deadline in his current deal. The move has been expected since an ESPN.com report in mid-May that Nowitzki planned to become an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career. But Mavericks officials have remained confident that they will secure a verbal commitment from Nowitzki on a new four-year deal early in free agency. Teams and free agents can begin negotiating on Thursday at 12:01 a.m. ET, but signed contracts can't be executed before July 8, when the league's moratorium on roster moves is lifted. Mavericks president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson told The Associated Press on Tuesday that he has a flight booked if necessary to be in Germany as soon as free agency starts. But sources told ESPN.com that Nowitzki's schedule is still in flux and that it has not yet been determined whether he will be in his native country or in the U.S. when free agency starts. Marc Stein is a senior NBA writer for ESPN.com. Information from The Associated Press was used in this report. --------------------- He would allow us to spread the floor, giving more room for Aaron Brooks penetration and allow for another playmaker
If we had any shot at him, I'd dump Bosh and anyone else to get him. But, I doubt we have any shot at him.
I don't think we have the salary cap space available to get him outright. I just don't see the Mavs do a S&T with the Rockets to give us Dirk.
This is just Dirk trying to get a new contract in before the current CBA expires. I bet his agent is also going to be angling for some guaranteed money with a lockout being likely. As an aside- do you think New York might have the juice to sign Dirk? If Lebron and Wade go quick, the Mavs may find themselves in a fight with NY. D'antoni and Walsh would probably do anything to get Dirk....that may be an interesting subplot.
True, but he did make it to the finals while Tmac can't make it out of the first round. I'd go after Dirk. Him along side Yao would be great, it would really stretch the floor. However, to be contenders, we will still need a legit backup center. No matter who we get, that's going to be the biggest key to our season.
It would be a cold day in hell before Cuban took Morey's call about a S&T for Dirk. We have a far better chance at getting LBJ, and we don't have more than a 0.5% chance there. Evan
it would be nice to get Dirk to play with us here and of course along side Yao Ming. I just don't think the team may have enough to pay Dirk unless he would take an offer that he would like. I probably would also love to have D Wade come and play here. what is the possibility of us getting him?
I would gladly take a fantasy team of Stockton, Malone, Pippen (in his prime), and Dirk if it meant a Rockets championship.
You guys are a bunch of funny hypocrite. Lol The Mavs are considered our division rivals and you guys through out the year express your hatred for Dirk of epic proportion, saying things like he's a flopper and a cry baby and that you wouldn't want him. Now that we have a chance to get him, its like you singing a sound of a different tone like never before!
Well I don't particularly like eating healthy, I know its the best for me so I do it. While I would probably have some issues with it, you are right...give me a title and i'll find a way to enjoy it.
This is normal. All fans do this. We may say that during the season, but we could care less if he was on our team.
He IS a flopper, and a crybaby. But nowhere in that argument of yours says he is a bad basketball player. Dirk is top 10 for sure, so why WOULDN'T we at least try?
