BRAUNSCHWEIG, Germany (AP) -- Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki suffered an ankle injury Saturday and was taken to the hospital while playing a game for Germany.

German basketball officials said the seriousness of the injury remained undiagnosed. Suspected is the forward suffered strained or torn ligaments.

"We hope it is nothing serious," said German coach Henrik Dettmann.

Nowitzki was rudely fouled by Florent Pietrus in the 13th minute of Germany's 76-68 loss to France in a warmup match for next month's European Championships. He hobbled off the court with a pain-twisted face.

The German basketball Federation had to pay a big insurance premium to gain a release from the Mavericks for him to play for his country.

If Nowitzki's injury proves serious, Germany's hopes of a medal at the European Championships in Sweden will all but vanish.

Man, thats some bad news. Love watching Dirk play. Most unguardable player in the league right now.

Even if its just strained ligaments, it sounds like something that may hamper him on and off for a good chunk of the season.

    SEE.

Everyone criticizing Mark Cuban cuz he won't let Bradley and used to not let Nowitzki play for Germany. SEE. This is why.....he can't get the insurance policy crap worked out. And SEE.

Well then.....that sucks for Germany. What a waste of money.

in every place in the world except for america, playing for your home country is alot more important than playing for whichever club you are on. im sure nowitzki has no regrets about playing for his country, and i dont think anybody has a right to tell anyone they cant play for their country.

sorry about the injury, but **** happens.

Even the great ones go down. Jordan missed a season as well. Happens to most of them.

This Pietrus guy is a ****ing idiot. Ban him for a year or at least as long as Dirk is out.

considering his knee, and now his ankle, you have to wonder how strong Dirk will be upon his return to NBA play in 2 months.

How could anything happening to Dirk Nowitzki not be considered NBA news?

    Nowitzki injured playing for Germany
    The Associated Press

BRAUNSCHWEIG, Germany -- Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki injured his ankle Sunday night while playing a game for Germany.

Mavericks spokeswoman Sarah Melton said Sunday that Nowitzki suffered a mild left ankle sprain and an MRI showed no bone or ligament damage.

Nowitzki is expected to rejoin the German National Team on Wednesday following the team's two-day break.

Melton said Nowitzki rolled his ankle when he stepped on another player's foot.

Nowitzki was fouled by Florent Pietrus in the 13th minute of Germany's 76-68 loss to France in a warmup match for next month's European Championships. He hobbled off the court with a pain-twisted face.

The German Basketball Federation paid a big insurance premium to gain a release from the Mavericks that would allow him to play for Germany
