The monopolistic fascists at Time Warner cable have told me that I can't recieve League Pass since my area hasn't been "upgraded" yet. So, I'm thinking of getting DirectTV. For anyone that has it... how much does it cost by itself, and how much more will I have to pay to get league pass?
You should be able to get the equipment free and possibly the installation. I've got a package that includes 5 HBO channels and 3 Cinemax channels along with the basic stuff. That runs approx 55 to 60 a month for two recievers. (Direct TV charges $5 for ea. additional receiver). I don't have the league pass but do have the football pass. I usually buy it early at a reduced rate, like 120 bucks, I believe. They split the payments over 4 months. I'm sure the NBA pass isn't priced that differently. I'm just guestimating the prices since I don't have a statement handy. Hope it helps.

I'm fed up with high Time Warner bills so I'm thinking about switching to Direct TV over spring break. I have a couple of questions: 1) Do I need to have the receiver connected to a local phone line at all times? I heard a local phone line is only necessary for PPV or a 2nd receiver. Do I need to have it connected during initial setup? I don't have a local phone line in Austin. 2) Does the box come with an access card? 3) Do you enjoy the local Houston channels? [edit - I'm having the dish setup in Houston, but I plan on using it in Austin]

The receivers have a built in modem type thing that DirecTV uses in case it has to re-set your system and it's also used to set up your programming. If you want PPV, yes. Second reciever, not sure. 2) Does the box come with an access card? Yes 3) Do you enjoy the local Houston channels? Yes! I get the major networks, ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, PBS and then my local WB and several others... we used to just get the 4 majors.
Thanks guys. One more question: what do you use for internet? I'm kinda hesistant because Time Warner jacks up the price of Road Runner for non cable subscribers ($54 here in Austin). Basically it makes the switch to Direct TV a wash. Plus Time Warner carries most Astros road games on their Prevue channel
