So I'm about to can Comcast because it has gotten to damn expensive. Right now my plan is: $159 + a crap load of taxes....about $210/month I've got every channel 2 HD DVR Boxes Internet with Power Boost 20mbs with modem Phone I really don't need the phone anymore, I can skip out on movie channels (I only really like Showtime and Starz for shows)....I hate to lose the fast internet speed, I know Comcast beats competition in that area. I will lose Rockets and Astros...sucks...but not a deal breaker. I hate to lose Redzone...I think NFL Network is available on those others. So what do you think? I don't think Uverse is available in Sugar Land yet...or that would be another option. Or do I just lose phone with Comcast and cut down on movies? I would like to spend no more than $125 a month including taxes.....
where are you getting internet? I personally dislike Dish, from top to bottom. Everyone I know that has DirecTV has very little complaints outside of the normal. Dish has no real advantage over DirecTV. The quality of picture and price is on par. Some say their HDDVR is a little better, but both have improved their hardware in the last year. The primary reason why I am anti-Dish is because of this article. As I am in the SatCom business, I can say this article is not embelished. http://finance.yahoo.com/news/dish-network-meanest-company-america-194008712.html?page=1 The advantages DirecTV: Whole house DVR: 5 DVR tuner that can share up to four rooms. I believe they still offer Sunday Ticket free for new subs. $100.00 referral bonus They have AMC They are in fewer contract disputes Other than that, they are fairly equal.
I just switched from Dish to Direct. The main reason was picture quality. Dish's DVR interface is slightly better, but IMO that's where it ends.
I love U-verse and have it at my place. However I just switched my mom's place from DirectTV to Dish because DirecTV took over a month to upgrade her to HD... The Dish Hopper is pretty freaking awesome, even when compared to my Wireless DVR with U-verse. Apprently Dish now has a deal with Blockbuster to offer thousands of movies on demand... you get it for 90 days free when you sign up.
I would be wary of switching. The plans direct tv and dish have may seem cheaper but in the long run they might cost you more. Both require you sign a 2 year contract and increase your price after one year. So in reality you pay less for the first year and in the second they make up their losses. I recommend that you call comcast and speak with their retentions department. I personally have U-Verse and when i thought about switching i called ATT's retentions dept and they gave me a significant discount just for being a loyal customer. Now if you can get U-Verse i recommend going that direction unlike the others Uverse does not require a contract (I didn't have one as far as i can remember) Provided its more expensive then the latter options you get what you pay for, Uverse IMO has far better customer service and their interface is far more slicker than dish options.
My parents have both at their house. They have both the Hopper and the Genie. Having tried out both, I think the Genie is slightly better when it comes to recording. I think the Hopper has a faster interface (they're supposed to come out with an even faster Hopper soon with built-in wifi so you could wait for that if you're going the Dish route). Picture quality absolutely goes to DirecTV, it has much more crisp HD. Dish also has Blockbuster@Home which is similar to Netflix with streaming movies and tv shows through your Hopper. As platypus said, you have to make sure on what kind of package you sign up for either one. You'll most likely be locked into a 2 year contract. Usually the 1st year prices are cheap, and then the 2nd year prices are the normal prices, but it just depends on what kind of offer you get. Also, NFL RedZone... with Dish, it's part of their multi-sport package which is $9/mo, I believe. With DirecTV, you have to have a Sunday Ticket subscription to have RedZone, and usually you can get that for free every year (I've been able to). If you're more of a sports person, DirecTV is probably a better choice. As far as keeping Comcast, I don't know what to tell you there.
If you switch from Comcast to Dish or Directv - where will you get internet from? If you only leave Comcast for internet your price will probably go up by a lot if you drop the TV package
I have dish. I'm okay with it, I haven't had directv so I can't compare directly. My sister has uverse and I thought my picture was quite superior but I think it may have as much to do with my vastly superior TV. One huge advantage on dish is the ability to add an external drive. I don't know if the latest directv models can do that. p*rn is much better on dish if that is important. I have an external drive that I filled with p*rn when I had xtsy for like six months. I think I ended up with like 250 movies. Cost-wise it was less than a buck per movie. Another added bonus is that with the external drive I keep the p*rn hidden when people are over.
