I know that some people here wanted him to play for the rockets and backup Yao.

Cuban is one hell of an owner. I don't have any evidence for it, only Stackhousian precedent, but I wonder if this transaction was predetermined.

Common convention would tell you that trading a guy is taken as a sign of disrespect unless they had a pep talk during the trade talks.

If this is all good and legal, I wish we'd do this kind of thing with some of our players. Mad respect for Cuban and his shady dealings. Mavs fans will be stoked.

While I'm sure they're glad to get him back, there's no way the Rockets would offer that guy the full MLE. I think Dallas overpaid big time on this guy...just like they did on their other center...

No surprise,Diop has been expressing his desire to go back there for the past few months. Both he and Bass can help in the front court.I have my doubts whether they can go all the way to the NBA Championship though.

When you look at the history of overpaid big men, it's not such a waste to spend the whole mid level on him.

well crap the bar has been set if a guy like Diop got paid the full MLE this season you know the rest of the league's free agents' agents are going to pointing at this contract as leverage to bargain for their client.

Diop for the full MLE? Unbelievable. I wish we could all be born 7 feet tall.

This guy has no discernible basketball talent other than being a giant ogre that can stand underneath the basket and clog the paint. Nothing, no upside, not much of anything. But hey, I guess that's worth $6M a year according to this tremendously flawed NBA market value system for big men.

True but technically, nothing's illegal that isn't discovered. Benefits for our team would be cheered. We're all kind of fair weather moralists.

Clogging the paint is a desirable and payable skill, aint it? Unless "skills" are exclusively reserved for wings. Post men with wing skills are called "soft". If this were a waste of money, we'd be happy about their signing. I'm kind of pissed about it as a Rockets fan.

The bar was set when guys like Kelvin Cato, Chris Kaman, Nene, Dampier, Adonal freakn Foyle just to name a few (of way too many) cashed in big time. Ain't nothin new.

Maybe not, but only because they don't have a legit center - I would be pretty upset with the Rockets if they used their full MLE to get Diop...I'd rather get Landry back!

I doubt if they would do something like that which would amount to overpaying him as you have said.

the bar is always different every FA season depending on who is available and how many teams have money to spend. last year when there wasnt too many high caliber free agents around you saw marginal all-star talent (see rashard lewis) get a lot of money. compare that to this season when you have players like Baron Davis, Brand, Arenas, etc out on the FA market you are going to see other players getting less money (imo more of what they are worth) since teams are going to throw their money (justifiably so) to the marquee free agents.

if a guy like Diop gets the full MLE this off season then there is no reason why players like turiaf, landry (though RFA), vujajic and other "role player talent" would not ask for the same

I was speaking solely on the premise of big men getting big contracts hence my examples were all big men. If Landry didn't have knee issues and was NOT a RFA I could see someone giving him a much bigger contract and us not matching (still possible) god forbid. We all know Turiaf isn't worth that much but I wouldn't be surprised if he got a nice sized contract (4-5 years starting at 30 mil or so) based on the fact that he's a big man with a lil bit of game. Vujacic? Not so much.

If that's your strategy your basically paying for only size and nothing else. I'd rather have a 6'9" skilled but undersized player like Bass at center than I would a 7 foot ogre with no basketball skills.

ahahah the mavs now have 2 overpaid centers.

at least diop didn't come out and proclaim to be the 2nd best center in the league.
