I escaped Jury Duty by asking a lot of questions. Always a great strategy. Tip: Always start your questions to the prosecution with "Wouldnt someone be guilty if (insert crime)" those guys will immediately axe you.
Not quite Larry David. The wanted to know if anyone had a bad experience with police officers. No details were asked other than did the experience taint your perception of officers. About 8 people raised their hands.
i found the key to getting out of jury duty - dont show up! i havent been summoned since 1994. i had the card in a stack of papers on my desk and found it like 3 days after i was supposed to be there. so i called the court and was honest about it - just told her i forgot. she said not to worry about it b/c they got enough jurors for that particular case, but if they hadnt i might have gotten in trouble. anyway, i have not been summoned since.
What's the deal with people TRYING TO GET OUT OF jury duty? I thought it was one of your duties as a citizen of your country... but you try to get out of it? Sad.
You ever been in a room with 90 other people listening to two cheap suit wearing clowns measure their wieners against one another with two other people caught in the middle? That and normally jury selection takes 5+ hours and you get a measly 6 dollar check for it? You lose a days work, you have to make small talk with strangers, it begins too early, and it just plain sucks.
No, I haven't, but to me that wouldn't matter. Even if it took 10 hours, if it meant for me to contribute to the justice system and its fairness, I wouldn't care if it were $6 or 6ยข, sir, I'd do it in no time, because that's what it costs. Who cares if you lose a day's work? Doesn't your work let you have that day no matter if you're selected or aren't? Are you telling me that you're so worried about "strangers" and "small talk" that you don't want to be there? If you don't like that process, vote for someone who can change it or change it yourself. For now, you have to go through it. I can't believe how much you have to do, like jump through hoops and find 'loopholes' just to stop from going. It is still sad.
I was honest in my reply about officers. In the end, there were more women than men in the final 12. The women were older, mom types. The men were the more outspoken about the interpretation of the law: Criminal Negligent Homicide.
I didn't get picked for Jury Duty a month or so ago and got my $6 check...The thing that surprised me is how many hot chicks there were...I need to go to Jury Duty more often and just hang out...
It's so weird. I have voted in every election since I turned 18, but in the 18+ years since I have never been summoned for jury duty. I would actually like to do this one day.
Getting picked for an actual jury worked out for me. We saw testimony in the morning and broke for lunch, which was free and they didn't really care how much you ordered. When we returned they told us that the defense made a plea bargain because it looked a like a no-win situation and we were sent home around 2 pm. That's much better than not getting picked, because I would have been sent back in the jury pool and stuck there until 5 pm in an uncomfortable room filled w/ ~200 people and no free meal either.
The one time I was summoned for Jury duty I asked to be excused. I was prepared to serve -- and the case sounded pretty interesting (three of the sweetest looking old ladies were accused of unlawful confinement, assault causing harm, uttering threats and other despicable stuff) -- but the trial was anticipated to last for 12 weeks. No way I could do that. I would have been OK with a week or two, but not that long. The judge was pretty lenient on excusing potential jurors. Never did find out how the trial turned out.
This is true. Most of the time, they just want warm bodies that may or may not have a pulse. Just act like Brad from Fast Times at Ridgemont High and you will surely be picked.
About ten to fifteen years ago my dad was on a Grand Jury. If I remember correctly it lasted several weeks
I've never been on a jury and in some ways would like to be. But I'm too stubborn to get along with eleven other people and would probably hang the jury rather than come to a consensus. Being an INTJ should be listed amoung the excuses.
