Did Tyronne Washington's workout affect our draft?

As the draft moved into the second round, I was crossing my fingers that a good shotblocking athletic big man would be available at our pick in the second round to further help out our frontline. Sure enough, Ernest Brown and Oluminide Oyedeji were there even though they were considered by some to be mid-first round material. A couple of other pretty good centers in Jabari Smith and Dan McClintock were available as well. I really like Langhi and can see why the Rockets picked him, but I wonder if Tyronne's work out convinced the Rockets they didn't need to look at these project big men. Anybody know how Tyronne's work out went? Is Tyronne pretty comparable to an Ernest Brown or an Oluminide Oyedeji? Do you guys think Tyronne has a chance of making the team and contributing in the near future?

that's an interesting thought oakdogg. When Mickeal, Carrawell, Oyedeji, and Brown were all on the board at 38, I thought for sure Rudy would take one of them. 2 "winners" and 2 very good big man prospects. I was fooled. But, you're right, we didn't draft one of those tough rebounding/shotblocking big men, even though we could use one.

    Size and Athletic Abilities
    Rugged and athletic.

    Defense
Defensively he is always active, has presence and can block shots. Guards nmust be frightened to penetrate inside his neighborhood. He's also an aggressive rebounder who possesses a quick release outlet pass.

Seemingly ideal. Quick outlet pass, rugged while athletic, aggressive on the boards, shot blocker.

I dunno if he's a player who can start, but I could see him being an 8th or 9th man on the roster.

I too would love to know how Tyrone Washington's workout with the Rockets went this summer. Will he be invited to the Rocket's camp this year? I think we could use a physical presence in the paint. I do not know the answers to your questions, but here is a quote from Oeilpere that was posted in the 'View From a Bulls Fan: Wants Cato-Fizer Swap' thread on this BBS, "But let me tell you, the Rockets also were happy with Tyrone Washington's overall progress this past year".

Possible to take minutes and/or job away from Pig Miller.

That is very astute observation. I posted something along that same vein a while ago.

"T's" workouts were great and I fully expect him to take a run at a bench spot. If Pig comes in with the same attitude and physical shape, I suspect he will be there also. Actually unless something drastically changes, I see Cato, Hakeem, Pig and Washington as the center spot options this year. They may rotate one of them intermittedly to the IR but all four will be around I think.

Throw in Collier to play a few MPG at center too. Assuming no trades, I could foresee the Rockets going to a young, outside shooting/slashing to the whole lineup in Collier-Thomas-Anderson-Mobley-Francis.

See, we have plenty of people to cover center if we banish Cato to Chicago for Fizer [IMG]

    Acting GM NIKEstrad,

If something like this went down:

Cat + Drew = Fizer + Hawk (Walt is traded for something, wouldn't have both Hawk and Walt on the same team)

Hope to have at least 2 1st round picks in 2001.

    Haywood?
    T Morris?

2001 Roster would be something like:

    Haywood
    Fizer
    Morris
    SA
    Francis

    Bench:
    T Washington
    Jason
    Langhi
    Cat
    Mooch

    Plus plenty of cap space.

No No No. We want Troy Murphy in next years draft. You think Croshere is good? Wait till you see Murphy.

Thanks for the update oeilpere! I was hoping someone could shed some light on the subject. Washington's skills interested me, and Pig really excelled cutting to the basket along side of our penetrating guards.

Well, Fizer would make drafting a PF moot.

Mango-yep. Did you see my 3 way in the other thread between Houston/Detroit/Chicago? How sweet would that be?

Also, I think getting Haywood and Morris may be tough. Morris should be the prime target, and hopefully he will (fits this team SOO well), then, I'd think we'd use our other pick to trade down (and pick up another pick/solid player) and draft Ken Johnson or Alvin Jones-6'11'' athletic shot blocking super defense centers with little offense (sounds like Cato [IMG])

I would have no problem with a 1 year time of both Walt and Hawk on the same team. If it got us Fizer, I'd do it every day.

    NIKEstrad,

I responded to that post in the other thread and you had no problem with the changes I suggested.

Man, I was surprised to see so many responses to my post out of the blue. Thanks for the update on Tyronne, oeilpere and Mango. I'm glad to hear Tyronne might give us some more muscle in the paint in the near future.

NikeStrad, I agree with your take on Morris as a great fit for the Rockets. However, I don't know why Ken Johnson or Alvin Jones would be in the Rockets' future. If they were the types of players the Rockets needed, why would the Rockets have passed on Oyedeji or Ernest Brown? Why would they have traded Pryzbilla? I think it's clear the Rockets are not planning on trading Cato. I'm glad too as I'm getting pretty pumped about the possibilities if he's really working out like the Rockets say he is (I believe CD and Rudy, since there's no reason for them to lie). 10 boards (yeah, I know how few guys get that many) and 3 blocks are not entirely out of the question for him. Plus, we just finished talking about Tyronne and his progress, so I just don't see why we need to be thinking about Ken Johnson.

10 boards is out of the question. Last year, Cato was an AWFUL rebounder. Not just mediocre, awful. 10 boards is great numbers.

He's had his rebounding moments in Portland before he came here. If he's really working out this summer and the Rockets are in contention, I think he should get more than 9, which is pretty good. 2.5 blocks is probably a pretty reasonable bet too. 10/3 is in reach. Predicting stats is pretty pointless though. Let's just say it's lookin' like Cato's going to be good next year (a change from last year), what with the coaches' comments and the choices the coaches made on draft day.
