Yes, this thread is about a Rocket's 2000 Move not a gorditta. I wonder if I can be the first one to get a thread moved INTO the Rocket's Forum.... that thought makes me laugh...hehe anyhow, I wanted to ask this outside the main forum cause the discussion here is often much better. Question: First, did Mobley's comments yesterday about loyalty and family give you renewed faith in sports star. Secondly, are you surprised to hear Mobley say it. As much as I love Cuttino Mobley as a player, and always saw him off camera jumping to the aid of his fallen teammates, I still often saw what Will sees in him...a preoccupation with himself that looks like self-serving selfish self-centeredness (redundancy added for emphasis). But man...not now. Mobley really surprised me. Together with those words of loyalty, he signs a 6yr contract way under market with apparently no signing bonus; he's entitled to 25%. It is few and far between we see a sports star do this. You'd expect their agents not to allow it, which makes me wonder if Mobley had to argue with his agent for the 6yr-no bonus, when Croshere is getting $7m.
I was amazed partner. No option in a few years to make fans worry about Cat and Francis' exodus to DC? No option after 2 years to insinuate Cat's declaration of worthiness (of the MAX)? Impressive. ------------------ Dubyah: Because the picture on the newspaper. It just seems so un-American to me, the picture of the guy storming the house with a scared little boy there. I was shocked. I had an article prepared based on Mobley signing a two year pact. I just couldn't see him signing such a deal as reported by Aldridge. Just seemed to good to be true. I guess I underestimated the man. I saw him as a "big money" player as many others did as well. I just wasn't surprised or enraged about it as many people were in the BBS. I now have a completely different opinion. The comments he made were very classy and loyal, something you don't see very often in today's sports world. I just have complete respect for him. I hope the two (Cat and Francis) will develop into the best backcourt duo in the NBA. ------------------ Nederland 2002 Qualifying Campaign (Damn those penalties!!!) <A HREF="http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Pressbox/6544" TARGET=_blank>Houston Rockets Space Center- Not just another ClutchCity.NET clone. I've liked Mobley since we drafted him..but man is it encouraging to hear an athlete talk like that. One thing I can say about he and Stevie Franchise is that they both seem to at least know the right things to say. I hope there's sincerity there...and I think there is. You hear them both talk about team goals first, and that's very rare for young players. Man...we're fairly lucky in Houston with the class of athletes that have played for our teams. Certainly we've had a few jackasses...but for the most part, we've had lots of good guys. ------------------
I believe Mobley visited this BBS and read what the REAL Rocket fans thought about him. How pissed off everyone got when it looked like he was gone. I think that really made him feel wanted here. Also, I think Rudy and Francis (among others) made him see the BIG picture. The Rockets are an up and coming team, loaded with young talent, that will soon gel into a playoff team. Toronto, on the other hand, are old. Carter will definitely leave when his contract is up. Where does that leave Toronto then? Money cannot buy happiness, and Mobley is happy in Houston ------------------ "Your not a real member of CC.net unless you have 1000 posts"
I guess another way to voice my respect for Mobley is this: I thought that I understood all of the reasons to leave. I dismissed loyalty as naive. I also believed that Cuttino would prosper in Toronto (i.e. fewer All Star guards in the east.). p.s. It is easy to point at Croshere's involvement, but I think that complaint is quiet due to the length of Cuttino's contract, and when the player option raises itself. ------------------ Dubyah: Because the picture on the newspaper. I have to say I was disappointed. I wish he was a little less loyal and signed the 2/3 year deal instead and cashed in when he got his Bird Rights. That seems to be the more financially prudent course of action for him. I think an undervalued contract is almost as bad as an overvalued one. He should have gotten paid what he was really worth; instead he got lowballed, slightly. I hope this doesn't cause any problems down the road. However, I am very happy he is a Rocket. And I'd like to pat myself on the back for never swaying from my position that he was going to stay here, even when it was reported he was leaning toward Toronto, even though I was wrong about his motivation (I thought he'd stay for the Full Bird contract). ------------------ Rockets Draft Obligations Summary http://www.gaffordstudios.cjb.net/

No you didn't! You're just trying to buck the system man! Now look what you've gone and done Rockets03! OK back to business... Mobley's comments yesterday confirmed what many of us know...Mobley is a class act and I am not suprised to hear him say it. He told us at the end of the season that he wanted to be here, but he would be cheating himself if he didn't at least explore his options. Although I was a little scared that he might leave Houston for "greener" pastures, deep down I think most of us knew he would stay. Someone in another thread compared Mobley's demeanor to that of Charles Barkley. I couldn't agree more with that comparison. Sometimes Cuttino may seem a little rough around the edges, but deep down he's a softy. Chuck remained in Houston for many reasons, none of which were the money. He knew we had a great team, coach and fan base. I wouldn't doubt it if Big Sexy had something to say to Cuttino about staying in Houston. ------------------ "I've been licking this carpet for hours and I still don't feel like a lesbian!"
I love the decision Mobes made, 31 million is still a massive amount to get paid to play sport for a job, but what i find interesting is the way the re-signing of Mobley has taken so much attention on BBS considering everyone was calling for a Cat Cull not that long ago, complaining about his shot selection, FG% and any other criticism you could hang on him, think the best one I heard was he just looks awkward. Ironic isn't it. Smeg of Mobley Apologist ------------------ Fun Police Says: 1. Posting in appropriate forums Sucks! 2. Grammar and sentence structure are not FUN! 3. Uh, Smeg, I don't think those who believed he had poor shot selection and a poor field goal percentage until the latter 1/3 to 1/2 of the season have changed their minds. Can't speak for the awkward criticism, though... ------------------ Just shut up and post
But Dr... he had a 49% fg rating during April! Walt had a 57% fg rating (63% if you ignore the game immediately following the 'socks vs. stick' battle suspension). ------------------ "At one of these governors' conferences, George [W. i forget who it was in a previous mobley thread that suggested the whole indecision regarding houston or toronto by mobley was a way by him to get attention and get a starting role in the lineup--something that would fit in with his supposedly self-centered attitude. it's not my personal take, but thought i should throw it out just in case. what do y'all think? was it a good character issue by mobley, or was it a ruse because he was gonna sign with houston anyways.. by making it dramatic he raised his value... ------------------ i need a vacation
No - I wasn't surprised - this was my comment from a post on December 16 1999. I was a little of on the contract deal but i was right about the "Heart & Soul" bit OK, heres my input on Mobley. Heypartner is correct - the maximum we could pay Mobley next year would be the mid level exception - around $2mill. I think you are all jumping the gun about him wanting to leave. He likes it in Houston, he knows that we gave him his big chance, he knows Rudy likes him, and he's a real heart & soul kind of guy. My prediction - he will take the mid level exception next year, along with a promise from Les(Shandon style)to get a sweet deal the following under full Bird rights. ------------------ Current Rocket's Salary & Contract Info
Shhhhhh, don't tell everyone. It's nice to read an intelligent thread again! I was one of the people that complained about his shot selection and stand by my words. Fortunately his selection did improve as the season wore on and he became one of our better go to guys. I expect him to improve even more of an improvement this season...hopefully with a consistent mid-range jumper. I have no doubt Mobley can score 18-24ppg if he can knock that shot down. ------------------
H E B, That's what I said... until the last 1/2 or last 1/3 of the season. ------------------ Just shut up and post
But you said it still didn't change your mind. p.s. what was HOV all about when Jenna was around? ------------------ "At one of these governors' conferences, George [W. HOV in Houston stands for: High Occupancy Vechile It is a special lane on the freeway that is inbound for morning commuters and flipped to outbound for the ride home in the evening. A car has to have a carpool (multiple occupants) to be able to use that lane, else a ticket. How that ties into Jenna, I don't remember at the moment. Mango ------------------ 1.
