Is there some sort of conspiracy cover-up going on involving the Rockets and MoT So Ed Martin has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to launder money, admitting he took gambling money, combined it with other funds and lent it to several players while they were still in college at Michigan. All the players have spoken and the DAs have commented about their statements, except for Maurice. Are they not talking about Maurice for reasons they can't say. It is worth remembering what Doc Rocket said earlier in the summer, here are some fairly poignant quotes about the Rockets current logjam at Power Forward, in particular Mo and Kenny "In the other thread, I posted that my boy told me that KT wasn't going to be moved for reasons that I really shouldn't post." And then " Ok....well, here's something. KT is going nowhere. I know..I know...I thought he was too...but I hear he is NOT going to be traded. " Then about a month later after the rumour junkies pushed Doc and Pops, he responded with "One of our PFs will be gone by January." That makes you wonder is there will be a hearing/enquiry completed by then, as January is a fair way off the trade deadline. Obviously if he is under investigation, they can’t talk about it and obviously Doc Rocket couldn’t say if that is reason why Mo might no longer be in Houston and couldn’t say why Kenny would definitely be staying. It is also worth remembering Federal Perjury is a crime of "moral turpitude". Clause 16 "Termination" of every Uniform Player Contract allows for the team to "null and void" a contract when I player fails to appear for work due to problems of "moral turpitude (even if the moral turpitude is considered a crime or not)" Finally, Jeff said Mo was in great shape, perhaps Mo is preparing himself for a stint in the Big House and making sure he can move fast enough if he drops the soap.
I was with you until you stated that Mo would possibly go to jail. He didn't lie about taking money so he won't be tried for lying.
Actually, how do you know he didn't lie? I don't see anyone even mentioning that he was even questioned. One can assume that there are only three reasons Maurice was the only one mentioned as receiving money, yet the Feds didn't mention his testimony: 1. They forgot to mention it like the other 4 players and Webber's dad and mother, 2. They never questioned him, like they did everyone else, or 3. They did question him; he lied, and they are investigating him further while keeping tight lips about his testimony, hence Smeggie's idea that Doc Rocket can't tell us why Kenny is untradeable now despite him originally thinking he would be traded by now. quite a conspiracy, but I have to admit it makes some Smeggy sense.
as an aside, if he is charged with perjury, and they terminate his contract, would that put us back under the cap, assuming Walt is coming off the books.
i never knew that lieing could do so muchg harm. I am glad mo didn't lie it just shows what type of person he is. And thats why i'm glad he is on our team. Come back strong MO!
If MT testified and admitted it, then he didn't commit the crime Webber is accused of. They weren't called before the GJ to face scrutiny for taking the "loans" or "gifts", they were there to provide testimony against the bookie. From what I've read, Webber is the only one who allegedly perjured himself. He's claiming he is innocent. Even if they indicted Maurice, a trial and conviction would take far longer than January.
Yeah, I swear I read about that somewhere a couple of months ago when this whole Webber thing started to come to the surface. Mo should be in the clear. I'll try and find a link.
Here's a link that says Taylor, among others, were "interviewed by investigators". http://vh80000.vh8.infi.net/sports/umich/boost2_20000602.htm Here's one spelling out what each player allegedly received. Taylor is alleged to have received more than $100,000 in loans. http://vh80000.vh8.infi.net/news/mich/martin23_20020323.htm "But suspicions remained. Taylor wore expensive clothes, drove expensive cars and was quick to flash a wad of bills. A former girlfriend, Verna Gallant, told the Free Press she recalled seeing "a lot of hundreds" lying on a table in Taylor's apartment once. Two other people said Martin covered the bulk of Taylor's living expenses. One person said: "Mr. Martin gives him $300 or $400 a week to live off of."" http://vh80000.vh8.infi.net/sports/umich/qmartin14.htm There are a number of other articles on that website. In all it seems the whole investigation into Ed Martin began with a car accident back in '99 where Taylor was driving a group of UM players and recruit Mateen Cleaves back from a party. Cleaves went on to sue Taylor and his grandmother, who "owned" the SUV(I did not find results of that suit). Jalen Rose has admitted to taking "pocket money". Robert Traylor and Louis Bullock have admitted to taking loans. Both players had in earlier interviews previously denied taking anything from Martin. Maybe I confused Taylor with Traylor. Apparently Taylor has testified, but is keeping quiet. "All four former players and former coach Steve Fisher, who was fired in October 1997, testified during grand jury proceedings that lead to Thursday's charges." http://vh80000.vh8.infi.net/sports/umich/martin22_20020322.htm "Each of the four players named in the indictment has testified before a grand jury about their involvement with Martin. Taylor has not commented since Martin's arrest." http://www.mlive.com/wolverines/aan...tories/wolverines/20020409runner_perjury.html
Pimp and stevierebel thx for all the links, but the fact still seems to point to people confusing Traylor with Taylor, just like you said in your thread. The attorney for Traylor and Bullock said that they both took money. Rose admitted to it. Webber denied it. We know what each of them said to the grand jury. Question still remains, are you confusing Traylor with Taylor, because there is no links showing what Taylor said. In fact, Pimps quotes say he is yet to speak about his testimony.
Yeah, this is a good find, especially for Smeggy. It's weird that all of the AP quotes explain what happened to 3 out of the four players. Are reporters that irresponsible? Probably... but it seems possible that they did not get information on Maurice because he's under investigation. Good post Smeggy.
From what I heard Taylor admitted to taking money. The only person who is in legal trouble Chris Webber and that is because Webber lied UNDER OATH! I think that's what people are confusing this with. People think that Mo, and Traylor and Rose could go to jail for taking money and that isn't the case. The only way they could go to jail is if they lied under oath. That's why they're going after Webber and none of the other people. Mo, Traylor, Rose, and other players part of the "Fab Five" have admitted to taking money, but Webber didn't. He's saying he didn't take money. That's why he could be in trouble, if he lied about taking money that's a serious crime.
<blockQUOTE>Originally posted by RocksMillenium From what I heard Taylor admitted to taking money. </blockQUOTE>You heard that from the people confusing Taylor with Traylor. Taylor has not spoken to the media about this, nor has his lawyer. Pimp just did an extension search for otherwise, and so have I, and so have nameless other lurkers who aren't posting the smoking gun link. As of right now, there is no Taylor link. And I can tell you for nearly 50% certainty (I'm dyslexic afterall), that the Chronicle has not mentioned any Taylor quote. Where is this quote? Until it is produced, it is just a Traylor quote mistaken for Taylor.
