Assert himself as the top predator? <iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/JshjynxJ62U" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Man what a verse.
It's going to be reeeeeaaaaaal interesting seeing who and how other rappers respond the coming week. This gon' be good
I like Kendrick; I first heard him on Spotify a couple years ago and been a fan since. I never thought he would be this successful but he deserves it. I couldn't care less for that verse though. I don't understand the hype.
Am I missing something? What's the big deal? How much of a diss can it be if he even called out the 2 other guys on the track?
Twitter also wasn't around back then.. With social media and the youngins Kendrick mentioned being so wrapped and connected into social media, I wouldn't be surprised if public pressure gets them to break. But mainly.. Eminem's bars were also more or so a "here's my top 10".. Kendricks is "here's who I'm going to eat up and beat up on a track"
Rappers (albeit sensitive ones) are going to take offense that 1. he didn't even name them... and 2. he's claiming crown of NYC being from the West.. So there's two pools of artists that are going to feel the itch
Maybe I'm just becoming a salty old man losing touch, but these new rappers ****ing suck dick. Maybe if we're lucky they'll all shoot each other over this. If twitter is going this nuts over this verse, I can only imagine how quickly it would have literally imploded after Tupac dropped 'Hit em Up'.
Sorry for the multiple posts (wish I could edit) That's why you have Lupe, Joe Budden and Joey Baddass talking sideways on twitter (didn't shout out and/or NYC rapper) And you have Pusha, Mac Miller just taking it as a nod
I'm speaking on the 3rd verse... Not the second. "Soon as a verse starts, I eat at an MC's heart What is he thinking? How not to go against me, smart And it's absurd, how people hang on every word I'll probably never get the props I feel I ever deserve But I'll never be served, my spot is forever reserved If I ever leave Earth, that would be the death of me first Cause in my heart of hearts I know nothing could ever be worse That's why I'm clever when I put together every verse My thoughts are sporadic, I act like I'm an addict I rap like I'm addicted to smack like I'm Kim Mathers But I don't want to go forth and back in constant battles The fact is I would rather sit back and bomb some rappers So this is like a full blown attack I'm launching at 'em The track is on some battling raps who want some static? Cause I don't really think that the fact that I'm Slim matters A plaque and platinum status is wack if I'm not the baddest, so..."
All he said was: "I'm cool with a lot of rappers, but I'm better than all of you and I want everyone to know it." Every rapper says **** like this, Kendrick just said it in a creative new way. Hopefully, this lights a fire under a lot of rappers asses *cough* Budden & Lupe *cough* and this makes them better. Damn, Kendrick is ****ing ill though.
Oh! Big deal. That's a verse a million rappers have written. What's different of Kendricks verse is making it pseudo personal by specifying people. (which is why I assumed you were talking of Em's other verse in that song). Rappers are sensitive. Everyone says "I'm the best out there" but when someone relevant says "I'm the best, here's a list of who I respect and whom I'm trying to best, and everyone else isn't even on the radar" - it'll strike a cord with several others.
I do see where you're coming from. It's your opinion that Em isn't that dope. I dunno... I guess I'm just getting old. I remember hearing that and thinking "Damn, He called out the industry!!" You got to understand, I'm still trying to understand Rap's newer fans... It's taking me some time to comprehend this generation. I think it's more of a marketing ploy for him to be on other rapper's fan bases radars and to scramble Twitter. He knows this will spark a controversy. Some of those he mentioned are not MC's, but simply rappers, and he knows that. They couldn't battle another rapper to save their lives. He called out people with cult-like followings. Very smart. Makes those guys step it up. Or at least I hope so. Every relevant rapper was/is scared of Em. The biggest selling and most illegally and legally DOWNLOADED rapper of all time. Plus, has more than enough skills to boot. The only people that challenged him(Benzino, Ja Rule, Canibus, Nick Cannon, ICP, etc.) were doing it for the wrong reasons... not from a skill and technical aspect. But I DO agree that Kendrick is ill. Very ill. A breath of fresh air in Rap's current climate. Brings flow, wordplay, bravado, arrogance, great ear for soundscapes, etc. He has the understanding of how to make an album, not just a mixtape. Has a chance to be really great... He understands the history of Rap and knows his place in it.
