I'm not sure if it matters very much. I think it's important that he was hung up, but whether his arms were spread or above his head isn't a big deal. It kills you either way, I think.

Even so, I'm skeptical of this guy's skepticism. The tradition of the cruciform goes way, way back -- back to people who'd see first-hand how prisoners were executed. Where did all the crucifix stuff come from, if not history?* Does it make the whole story better somehow? Were they grasping for a justification of their new logo?

I acknowledge that it's possible that Romans started crucifying people on a cross a century or two later and they weaved that into the narrative after the fact to flesh out the Jesus story with what they knew at the time.

I don't think it really matters but you do have the whole dynamic of "Jesus bearing his cross". A key element of the story of the crucifixtion is Jesus carrying his cross through the streets, the symbolism of bearing our cross

Don't the Jehovah's Witnesses show Jesus crucified on a straight pole? And they claim that it was how crucifixions happened in the 1st century? I think that's up to significant debate. There's a whole Wikipedia page devoted to the debate as to what Jesus died on.

Either way, it doesn't matter much.

It doesn't matter to believers or non-believers. A total waste of time. He could have been hung by his little toe and it wouldn't make a difference other than to the people making lots of money selling crosses.

A tree trump is NOT going to look very good atop a cathedral spire. Nor will it look good hanging on my thick gold necklace. :(

Yeah, Max has really axed for it in this thread. He should go out on a limb, as others suggested, and get out from under the comfortable shade of religion threads.
