I was playing soccer yesterday and I accidently kicked someone in the shin, it caused huge pain to my big toe, and now it hurts like hell. When I try to bend it, it hurts. It doesn't look disfigured or anything. Should I get some x-rays on this thing (I really am lazy and don't want to) or should I wait this on and it will eventually heal?

    Thanks

There isn't much you can do if it is broke. If it isn't all mangled just man up and in a week or three you will be fine.

Smash your left thumb with a hammer.

You'll forget all about your toe.

Why can't you wait until your back completely heals before messing with your toe?

Ask your 7'6" buddy to see if he has any good advice.

No. Toes are toes. Even if it is broken, the only thing you can do is tape it up and get a splint. You can get that at Walgreens without having to worry about the doctor.

Very true about fingers and toes. Unless it is crooked or mangled there is nothing they can or will do for you excepty maybe prescribe you some painkillers. For the money you would spend at the doctor go pay $5 for a splint and some tape at Wal-Mart or a drug store.

I wouldn't put fingers in that group. I had to have surgery to repaired a finger I broke playing basketball. They had to wrap a wire around it to keep it in place because part of the bone had broken off.

I'm not a doctor, but if the toe in question is not disfigured or shades of purple and blue it's likely not broken. Quit playing soccer.

If you have insurance, go to the doctor. The co-pay is what? $20-$30? At least you'll know for certain then.

Well if the same thing happened to a toe I am sure they would have to do something similar. I broke my finger and that's all they did for me.

You may have chipped a bone in your toe and if you did you might have to get the chip removed or it will continue to cause you trouble. This just happened to a friend of mine and after a month of suffering because he listened to the same advice you are hearing here, "There is nothing they can do.", he finally went to get it checked out and had surgery to remove the chipped bone.

Suck it up and be a man. It is only a toe. Take some Aleve and where sandals when all possible. Avoiding soccer for a while is also adviseable.

I had something similar happen to my middle finger on my right hand. I was fixing something and while I was moving a part around my finger bent sideways at the middle knuckle and I heard a crunch like celery snapping. I can still move it but it is stiff and very sore. Think I did any real damage?

Both of my pinky toes have been smashed, also due to soccer. There ain't a damn thing you can do about it. You can try taping it to the next toe so that it restricts movement. The last time I did it was 1 day before I had some tryouts. I had also some brand new boots, of which I always buy 1/2 size too small. I can't tell you how much pain I was in. I still made the team. They were more impressed when I told them about my toe.

If you broke your toe, it probably won't swell up and get all scary looking for about 24 hours. That was my experience. And yeah, as said above, just tape it to the toe next to it. There aren't any cute little toe casts.

Something similar happend to me 4 years ago. I was kicking a soccer ball in the street in front of my house. I was setting up for a "free kick", I placed the ball right on top of the curb. I missed the ball and hit the curb with my big toe. The next day I could'nt bend my toe or anything and it was all purple. I just let it heal, did'nt see a doctor or anything. Like Saint Louis said, wear sandals! A couple months later I suffered an ingrown toenail on the same toe and they had to remove my toenail because of infection. I don't know if it was because of me hitting the curb with my toe. Just thought I'd share. Good luck.

It's probably broken. Unless it's disfigured, don't go to the doctor.

I've been there twice. The first time cost me about $700 because I went to the emergency room, they took an x-ray, and gave me a $5 splint. I paid what I owed after insurance (about $300). Then a couple months later, I got another bill. I thought it was bull$$$$ and ignored it until they threatened to ruin my credit and then paid it.

The second time, I figured it was a hairline fracture just like the first time and let it heal by itself. Total cost = $0.

My son just broke his toe a month ago. It looked disfigured so I took him to the dr to see if it was dislocated or badly broken. It turned out to be just broken and they told him (called our house after the xrays came back) to buddy tape them - which he did not.

If it's not disfigured, I'd say walk it off. Oh and next time invest in the steel-toed Nikes.
