http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/4561975.html Major explosion rocks northwest Harris County Pipeline blast in the Cy-Fair area could be seen for miles By ANNE MARIE KILDAY Copyright 2007 Houston Chronicle BLAST IN NW HOUSTON Explosion in Cy-Fair area A huge gas explosion that could be seen for miles erupted in a rural area in northwest Harris County, about two miles north of FM 529 and two miles west of Fry Road, officials said. The fire, near Black Horse ranch, was tapped out by about 7:45 p.m., officials of the Cy-Fair volunteer fire department said. Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Mark Braswell said that a 31-inch natural gas pipeline exploded at about 6:45 p.m. near Fry Road and Logenbough. The pipeline was "blocked off" about an hour later, Braswell said. "As of right now, we have no injuries or fatalities," Braswell said. The fire was in a rural area, away from any homes or businesses. According to Lt. John Martin, a spokesman for the Harris County Sheriff's Office, the explosion and fire were so intense that one captain with the department stayed about a quarter-mile away from the blaze. "It was too hot get any closer," Martin said. The "intense heat" impeded emergency vehicles from getting to the scene, Martin said. Centerpoint Energy officials were on the scene, Martin said. Braswell said firefighters were urging residents near the fire to shelter-in-place. He cautioned there was some "residual gas" in the area that was still burning. Many of the Cy-Fair volunteer firefighters were called away from the department's annual banquet to battle the blaze. There was heavy traffic and "complete gridlock" near U.S. 290, Martin said. Residents in the area reported the loud explosion, "a rumbling sound" and a bright orange "fireball" in the sky. Barbara Bayless, a resident of the 6800 block of Eagle Ridge said she heard "a loud explosion that shook my house" at about 6:30 p.m. "It was so loud that all of the car alarms went off," Bayless said. "Now you can hear this giant whooshing sound like a jet engine." Bayless said she instructed her children to come and stay inside during the fire, although they had ventured outside right after the explosion. "I put my hand on the front door, and it wasn't vibrating as much as it was just a little while ago. I still see the flickering of the color from the fire." "It is still making that jet engine sound," Bayless said at about 7:20 p.m. "It just got bright again, it was slowing down. You can kind of see it getting dim and getting brighter. We are just trying to stay indoors. "There's no longer that jet engine sound, and I can't see the big orange glow in the sky anymore," Bayless said. Chronicle correspondents Kim Pina and Pearl Cajoles contributed to this report.
Dude, I was taking poop, and all I could hear was this vacum type sound, I don't know something like that. Thought there was a nuclear explosion. Went outside and you could really hear it. Then I looked up and there was this huge fire ball. The sound kept on coming for an hour or two.
It could have be A LOT worse. The story I heard was a guy using a bulldozer hit the pipeline causing it to leak. This was around 3:00. He went running away, called the gas company and they started shutting down the lines. Well, the guy who ran away left the bulldozer running...it eventually caused a spark and that's when the line blew. Had they not shut down the lines this could have been really bad.
are you kidding me!!! i live in the copperfield/bearcreek area and i felt that sucker all over my house and even my chest. after the initial shockwave it sounded like a jet engine swooshing sound. i'm probably about 2 miles away from the actual site but damn that was impressive.
hahaha i was on my way to see Ghost Rider coming from Hwy 6/59 going towards the Fountains and saw it, wondering what the hell it was.
I was watching some soccer... I heard the boom and then the rumbling (I am on the NW side of Fry at Clay) and then some sort of thunder-like noise going lower and lower... I thought it was my heater, but it wasn't... many people called me... I had to look outside... by the time I saw it, I saw the light but really really small...
