Chance, can you put this on...nevermind. Anyhoo, I didn't feel like listening to the Comets game on SportsRadio 610, so I put in on ESPN 790. Calvin was on for a whole hour discussing basketball with the host Carl Dukes. I didn't want to take down notes while driving. Basically, callers would call in and ask him questions and stuff like that. One of them was a story about his first game. They were playing the Lakers, and how he didn't move for seven seconds because he was in awe of the Lakers. They had Wilt, and West, and Baylor and all those guys. They did comparisons of Hakeem and Shaq. He favored Hakeem because he said that he made those guys better. Shaq asked Calvin for help with the freethrow shooting. He wanted to, but couldn't because it would have been a conflict of interest. They talked about Dwyane Wade, and how damn good he is. Said Kobe should have been the MVP, and how he is the best guard in the game, with Dwyane Wade on his tail. Some caller asked about the evolution of the center, and how the back to the basket center is diminishing. Calvin said it's basically happening, and we will probably see more of these players. some crap like that. He talked about his camp of course, and registration and all that stuff. It has a new name. Did anybody else hear it? I'm sure if they did, they would have posted it. and if it has been posted, my bad. I searched for it.
I caught some of it. Thanks for the recap. No mention about him possibly coming back to announce games for the Rockets?
Well there's a great way to spark a conversation......someones gonna flame on this. And for the record, he was found NOT GUILTY.
He also talked about some kind of NBA legends things he was involved in recently in Manilla, Phillipines [sp]. He was there along with Dennis Rodman, Dawkin, English, one other NBA legend and 4 to 5 NBADL players - doing clinics as well as players their legend counterparts over there. He said they liked him so much that they have contracted him to come back to the same country sometime in August to do some more clinic work. He also talked about Hakeem being the best center in the history of the NBA in terms of physical talent and gifts. He said Shaq has not necessarily grown or improved his game - he agreed with the host that Shaq career body of work is arguably more impressive. He had so many good stories and he was really sharp with his answers. There was never a dull moment. I still wish we could have him back.
Kam....Im surprised no one has asked this question yet..... Did Calvin say anything about possibly returning to the broadcast booth alongside Bill. Gawd, I never thought Id say this but I miss his rendition of "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire"
You're apparently a Yao fan who is new to the Rockets. True Rockets fans love Calvin Murphy, both for his contributions as a player on the Rockets and for his years and years as a beloved announcer. And yeah, he was found not guilty.
Are we really that filled up with Yao fans.......man Ive been away from this board for too long. And for the record, Ive got nothing against Yao fans. We are all the same....basketball fans. So its all good....
Well, judging from the fact he has Yao in his username AND he isn't sure who Calvin Murphy is, I'm going to have to assume he's pretty new to the Rockets.
We sucked last year because of the Calvin Murphy curse don't you guys get it? its sacriledge that Calvin (innocent) was denied his job back he returns to talk to the public today on 6 - 6 - 6, its an OMEN, give Calvin his job back, let Clyde go back to fix the bar-b-q joint
Murphy was the best annoucer we had.. He made the game more entertaining with his humor. I believe he is a great guy and wish that one day he will come back and join Bill. Thanks for the info on the ESPN 790, wish I could have heard it myself.
The not guilty verdict didn't do it for me. It was the interview I saw on ESPN with Calvin after the trial that made me believe he wasn't guilty. He cried and talked about regret that it would ever come to this with his own family and that the verdict mattered less than what his family thought of him. If he was guilty, he would have been happy with the verdict and try to move on. Also, I heard that it ended up being an easy case because his daughters couldn't get their stories straight. Calvin definitely needs to return to rocket basketball.
he was NOT GUILTY you ass calvin murphy is as big a part of the rockets as dream or rudy t - him and bill were the best broadcasting duo i ever heard and its a complete injustice that he cant get his job back.
Calvin brought a lot to the Rox, and made telecasts easier to 'sell' to my wife. She enjoyed Bill and Calvin, but hasn't cared for Worrell without Murph. Hey, TV guys -- consider the demos!
