http://msn.espn.go.com/nba/news/2002/1016/1446994.html Knicks' McDyess out for season after kneecap surgery Associated Press NEW YORK -- There's nothing indefinite about Antonio McDyess' status anymore. The New York Knicks' starting power forward will miss the season after having surgery Wednesday on his broken kneecap. Dr. Norman Scott, who performed the two-hour procedure at Beth Israel Hospital, said the injury would not end McDyess' career. "He will be able to walk on crutches and put full weight on it later this week,'' Scott said. "We expect him to have a full recovery and be 100 percent by the start of next season.'' The Knicks have applied to the league for a disabled player exception. If granted, they will have 45 days from the date of McDyess' injury -- a deadline of Nov. 25 -- to use that salary cap slot to sign a free agent or acquire a player in a trade who makes no more than $4.56 million. McDyess, whom the Knicks acquired in a draft day trade with Denver, was injured in an exhibition game last Saturday. Scott said McDyess will be able to begin rehab following a four-to-six week period when the knee will be immobilized in a cast. McDyess went down clutching his left knee after dunking with 1:55 remaining in the loss to Phoenix. The injury happened to the same knee that McDyess had surgery on last season, sidelining him for all but 10 games. The Knicks say the two injuries are not related. In three preseason games, the 6-foot-9 forward averaged 17.7 points and 13.0 rebounds. The Knicks acquired McDyess and the rights to point guard Frank Williams in June for guard Mark Jackson, center Marcus Camby and the rights to forward Maybyner "Nene'' Hilario. Williams broke his wrist during a summer league game and has not yet returned to the Knicks. Camby is out indefinitely following hip surgery last Thursday.
He may have just set a couple of NBA records 1. Most games missed during a carrer due to injury 2. Getting paid the most money for doing nothing over a career 3. Longest time on the IL
Could this mean that Spree gets traded to a loser team for a different problem player with a larger but shorter contract?
Good thought. I was thinkin the same thing- the Knicks will probably just blow off this year unless they get that injury exception that they signed for. But they might as well trade Spree. I'm sure they'd rather trade Houston but no one's that dumb to take his contract.
And Penny Hardaway? Aside from the money collected, those records have gotta be held by Sam Bowie or Bill Walton. Walton does have two rings though.
Depending on how you count them, Bernard King may have missed more games than McDyess. Bernard King played 55 games for the Knicks in 84-85 and then missed all of the 85-86 season. King then played 6 games in the Knicks 86-87 season . Later in his career, King went on to play 64 games for the then Washington Bullets in 90-91, missed all of the 91-92 season and then played 32 games for the Nets in 92-93. Also, does Jayson Williams count since the Nets are still paying him?
UH OH, could I smell a new theory, the 'NY Knicks end up with the #1 overall pick in 2003, say 'Hello' to LeBron James' theory? Seriously, I feel bad for McDyess. He seems like a nice guy who is never in the right place at the right time, i.e. the new LaPhonso Ellis. (Interesting that they both started out in Denver, huh?)
this is karma. remember when the Rockets wanted him and he turned us down. Let this be a lesson to all in the NBA. Webber better be glad the Rox turned him down before he had a chance to turn us down. Poor, poor 'Shard, I had big hopes for him, but it looks like he will end up being injury plagued for the rest of his career. You heard it here first. WoW
