in one of my political science classes, we had a special speaker come in and give a speech about how many Africa countries are using diamonds to fund civil wars. it is remarkable what these groups are doing and this website goes through some of the human rights abuses that occur. http://web.amnesty.org/diamonds/index.html One of thing that suprised me the most is how Debeers, the main group that controls the diamond market, still bought these "conflict" diamonds. i've been thinking of how this could be resolved. Any solutions?
Al Qaeda has had operatives in Sierra Leone for years fomenting the "civil war" there. In actuality, they have been working with Red Mafia elements to mine the stones. Actually, forcing the locals at gunpoint to mine the stones. I absolutely refuse to buy or wear any diamond knowing that.
Actual I read somewhere, don't recall where, that Osama bin Laden has a big diamond smuggling ring from Africa that's used to fund Al-Qaeda. EDIT: Friggin treeman is everywhere. LOL
