I want to attend a technical school soon and have been looking recently. I was close to going to ITT Tech until my girlfriend changed my mind. Their big cons were the price ($417 per credit hour, usually around $1,250 per class) and the fact that their courses do NOT transfer over to any other school other then their own. So you're paying close to $50K for an associates degree.

Does anyone know anything about DeVry? I have an appointment in a couple hours with a advisor there but I might not even go if their programs are the same way. Ive heard they are cheaper then ITT and University of Phoenix. Anyone have any information that'll benefit me? Thanks.

We'd like to show you the next great video game, the only problem is that you haven't created it yet.

    That was good.

"Hey! My son got into Devry."

"Really? What did he do to get in? Walk through a door?"

Be weary of these types of schools. Most of the "advisors" at these places are actually just sales people making a commission based on how many people they "advise" to sign up for their very expensive and often worthless classes.

When I was an IT recruiter, seeing ITT Tech/Devry etc. on a resume pretty much landed it the trash can. Sad but true.

ITT Tech and Devry are absolute crap if you are planning to work in the IT field one day. Stay far far away from those places. Just get some entry level experience under your belt and start working your way up. You'll learn a lot more, and save a lot of money.

Legitimate learning institutions do not advertise in between episodes of Hogan's Heroes and Gilligan's Island.

I was actually on the verge of starting at Devry late last year. But I was going to be paying $1000 per month. I couldn't afford it at the time, hell I can't even afford it now, so I decided not to. I was going for Computer Engineering, but the only reason I did not start was because it was too expensive. I actually wanted to go for Game and Simulation Programming. Anyone know how I can get into that field without going to Devry or ITT?

I graduated from DeVry in 1984 with an Associates in Computer Science. I have been in IT for 20+ yrs and my degree has served me well. At the time it was what I could afford and it got me in the door.

I have recently started going back to school to change careers (to Human Services -- but that's a whole nother story). I am going to a Community College and all my relevant DeVry credits did transfer (even though they were 20+ yrs old).

Now, after saying all that if I was starting over and money was an issue I would go to a Community College instead.

You need to learn how to program first. Just go to a a regular school. Then once you get a foundation, you can try to branch out from there into something more specialized (like video games.)

I work at a large IT company and every resume that my group gets with those types of schools on it goes straight to the trash.

Take it from someone who went to ITT (back in 2000, when it was a lot cheaper) go to San Jacinto College or Houston Community College.

Now that I'm back in school I had to start all over again because, like you said, nothing transfers. And you say that it's 50k now? Don't even think about it anymore. You can get the same degree at San Jac for about 6k.

Can't speak for Devry, but if you go to the meeting and the advisers act like used car salesmen and all the teachers show signs of personality disorders or reek of liquor, you should probably leave.

I imagine employers are doing this to my resume today... Even with 5 years experience.

For what it's worth, a guy on my team that I work very closely with went to Devry, and he's very good. Ultimately, I think it's going to come down to the person, not the school.

But yeah, I would imagine that if you had two applicants, and one went to Devry and the other guy went to UT, the Devry guy isn't going to get the call.
