So last night I went to see Devo. I was worried because there were 3 other bands on the set list, and I didn't want this to be some kind of goofy reunion thing where each band only gets 20 minute sets, and play just their hits and then leave. I love Devo, and I had seen them a couple of times before. I didn't think they would be part of a show like that. Anyway the first few bands were to an extent what I described. But then Devo came on. It was amazing. They started with one of their old art film clips from New Traditionalist era featuring General Boy. Then they showed several clips of videos and from their art performance movie The Truth about De-evolution while "That's Good" backing music played. Then it kicks into Devo performing "That's Good" and they were on point. They started with the red Energy Domes and Yello suits, and went through several costume changes during the show. Everything they did was done precision, and full gusto. They didn't just stick to hits, they played an excellent version of "Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA" It was a real spectacle as much if not more than when I had seen them before. They also brought out the Jihad Jerry character and Osama Bin Laden, which definitely pushed the envelope. It was one of the best Devo shows I have ever seen, and felt completely inspired and not at all a sell-out type attitude. It was part concert, part performing art piece, and everything a loyal spud could ask for.
the three best concerts i've ever seen were all DEVO. i'm glad you had a great time. the houston show a couple of months ago was great, but the san antonio show (the following weekend at sunken gardens) was freakin' spectacular! we're all DEVO...
Did they play "Dare to be Stupid"? I heard that they covered that song after Weird Al recorded it. Burn your candle at both ends Look a gift horse in the mouth Mashed potatos can be your friends
I didn't get to see them when they were here in htown. All of my DEVO friends were out of town. I would of gone solo if it wasn't assigned seating. One of my all time favorites though.
The show in SA was great. Except the beer line, which wasn't so great. It was the first time I'd seen Devo. Highly recommended if they ever come through your town.
I haven't followed Devo since they were big back in the day so please excuse me if this is a stupid question. Was Mark Mothersbaugh with the band? The guy make serious cash doing movie soundtracks. I would think it would only make sense if he was doing it from love of the old Devo days. It's got to be a major pay cut for him.
if you followed DEVO, you would know... yes, mark is an original member of DEVO from 1973. the current "tour" consists of all original members except the drummer.
He was there and in super form. He is still in shape and very active on stage. Though his score composition can be seen in a slight belly though the rest of his body is still relatively thin.
