    Camby's stats can't match Yao's votes
    By Adam Thompson
    Denver Post Staff Writer

Cleveland - It never hurts to have a constituency.

Although Marcus Camby's numbers arguably are better than those of Houston's Yao Ming, the Rockets center already has a huge lead on his Nuggets counterpart in voting for the All-Star Game, which is Feb. 19 in Houston. Ming leads NBA players with 729,178 votes. Camby ranks a distant second among Western Conference centers with 250,312.

"China has so many people over there," said Camby, who averages 16.8 points, 13.3 rebounds and 3.2 blocked shots to Ming's 18.9 points, 8.7 rebounds and 1.5 blocked shots. "If they're going by votes, he's going to be in it the rest of his career. Then it's in Houston now, too, his new hometown."

Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony also will likely need the help of league coaches to make the all-star team. He ranks fifth among Western Conference forwards with 111,419 votes. Balloting ends Jan. 22.

"Only thing I can do is just keep playing the way I'm playing," he said. "If it happens, it happens."

    Poor Marcus...

But seriously, assuming salaries were equal, if we offered Denver Yao for Camby, they'd move him in a heartbeat - that's the true measure of who is worth more.

What does it even matter? No matter whom gets voted in, I guarantee that the NBA coaches will choose the other as a reserve. There are only two quality true centers out west.

Oops sorry, I meant to say that there are only two centers playing at the all-star level this season out west.

Brad Miller's playing well below his averages from the last couple of years. He's not nearly as "all-star" caliber when compared to Yao or Camby this season.

What was it that Chris Rock said about people who like the fact that they're ignorant? Keeping it real, Marcus, Keeping it real.

btw, Americans like Yao. Yes I know, it's a terrifying concept to comprehend. Some of these players get so wrapped up in their isolated world they think everyone has to be "street" or whatever to have other people liek them. There's a damn good reason NASCAR has better ratings than the NBA

I would like to see a breakdown on the end. I am pretty sure that on the end, Yao's paper votes alone can win him agaist Camby's total votes, which means not a single Chinese online vote will be counted. I would like to see their faces when that possible fact is actually presented to them.

Camby is having a great year but it's only a matter of time before he gets hurt. He always does.

I believe he is already hurt; sprained pinkie (or finger?) seems to be the cause this time.

You have to admit Camby has been having a great season but Yao is also playing well and getting stronger as Camby seems to be losing steam.

I do think Camby will be the backup C this year but should not take anything away from Yao.

I can guarantee you Yao's paper ballots would outpoll Camby's by at least a 4:1 margin

    Camby's number is very overrated!

His has ZERO post ability, and got wide open jumper because MELO had double team on him.

I will say, if A.Miller not on the court, his number will be 8 pts and 10 rbs

his monster numbers dont have big impact in the game

Camby isnt the offensive player that Yao is. Thats what the allstar game is about. And as it has already been said, Camby is always injured.

He had a great month...we'll see if he can keep it up. Based on last month, Camby is clearly the better player. I seriously doubt he'll have a better year than Yao though.

It doesn't matter though, all star game is about who we want to see. If only Rybo was on the ballot, Chinese fans love that guy.....I'm just waiting for Rybo to get a shoe contract in China. Marcus, more people want to see Yao, learn from shaq and deal with it. And yes, as hotballa said, more americans want to see yao too.

I actually like Camby as a player, it goes all the way back to his knicks days. He is exactly what we need here.

For the love of god, can people PLEASE stop stating a stupid myth as fact!!! Yao is just simply a lovable player. He leads even Shaq in paper ballots. Yes, paper ballots, not online poll!!! Stupid whiney losers. It used to be Shaq who whined, now it's Camby. The funny thing is, some sport writers think the same thing.

Marcus Camby is way too brittle to handle a full season. His knees will be messed up in a few weeks, so no need to worry about him.

Actually a better question should be asked whether Shaq deserves to start as the center for the East team. he is injured the majority of the time and is only averaging 16.6 ppg on 45% shooting. 7.2 rpg and 42% FT shooting also do not help making a better case for him.

Like it or not, Yao has become the best center in the league this year. Camby is close and is having a great year. However, he isn't and won't be ever in Yao's league as a center. The guy does not even have low post moves as of yet.

    Case closed.
