You know, when I thought Yao was coming back, I'd be very interested in Oberto - but there isn't much point now. I bet he goes right back to the Spurs.
I agree he will be back with the spurs. It is just stupid that there are no rules about this. This way the Spurs got much better and for nothing (since the players they traded away got waived and cann sign back with them).
There is a rule, player can't rejoin the team that traded him until 30 days later. It was put in place so teams can't just manipulate trades near the trading deadline. But I don't know how that comes in effect in the offseason, if the player have to sit out out those 30 days once the season starts. Still won't bother the Spurs or Oberto that much if he does rejoin them.
Right on, there's a reason Oberto gets traded then gets cut. Oberto is like Scola in that both are slow-footed and minimal leapers, but Oberto doesn't have Scola's crafty post game and reliable jumper; in other words, he's quite useless.
I don't get why Detroit would be so quick to waive this guy. They've got jack squat at center, and while he's not starter material, he's got enough size and experience to hold down the position for 20 mins per. At $3.5M (expiring, it's not like he's crippling their cap. I'd honestly grab him off the waiver wire if my team had the space and need at the 5. Evan
He has already said that he doesn't want to sign back with the Spurs I believe. I would love to sign Oberto. Him and Scola play very well together. He'd be a very good BACKUP center. Only problem is hes only 6-10.
doesn't he have a heart condition? and he's not that good anyway, servicable at best, if the Rockets are rebuilding, why waste a spot to a 30+ year old undersized PF-C
We have NADA, ZIP, ZILCH at center right now. Oberto would at least be of some service. Beggers can't be choosers, especially when it comes to frontcourt help.
No interest. "Once Fabricio Oberto(notes) clears waivers in Detroit on July 7, there will be several teams courting the ex-San Antonio Spurs forward, including Washington, Phoenix, Sacramento and Indiana, sources say" per adrian worjonoski (sp)
Only $1.5M of Oberto's salary is guaranteed. Waiving him opens up another $2M in cap space to go towards the Gordon and Villanueva signings. Perhaps this gives Detroit a little more room to sign a third free agent.
Yes,he has had heart surgery to fix Atrial Fibrillation. This can prolong his career provided if someone is willing to pick him up. No use on the Rockets IMO.
He's a worthless chump and the Spurs made a huge mistake bringing him back after their championship instead of trying to improve their team with Scola. Talk about some serious remorse.
