Democrats blast GOP lawmaker's 'suppress the Detroit vote' remark

    Wednesday, July 21, 2004

    ASSOCIATED PRESS

Democrats on Wednesday denounced a Republican lawmaker quoted in a newspaper as saying the GOP would fare poorly in this year's elections if it failed to "suppress the Detroit vote."

State Rep. John Pappageorge, R-Troy, acknowledged using "a bad choice of words" but said his remark shouldn't be construed as racist.

Pappageorge, 73, was quoted in July 16 editions of the Detroit Free Press as saying, "If we do not suppress the Detroit vote, we're going to have a tough time in this election."

"I'm extremely disappointed in my colleague," state Sen. Buzz Thomas, D-Detroit, told reporters Wednesday during a conference call. "That's quite clearly code that they don't want black people to vote in this election."

Blacks comprise 83 percent of Detroit's population, and the city routinely gives Democratic candidates a substantial majority of its votes.

Pappageorge's remark reflected the GOP's failure to send black voters a persuasive message, said Rep. Alexander Lipsey, D-Kalamazoo.

"This is the endgame strategy the Republican Party has decided to utilize, rather than positive strategies," he said. "They are strategizing, "How can we get those folks we don't care about from going to the polls?"'

Pappageorge said he had not read the remark attributed to him but did not deny making it.

"In the context that we were talking about, I said we've got to get the vote up in Oakland (County) and the vote down in Detroit. You get it down with a good message. I don't know how we got them from there to "racist,"' Pappageorge said. "If I have given offense in any way to my colleagues in Detroit or anywhere, I apologize."

What would be the right choice of words, I wonder? I mean, what euphemism could you possibly use that would positively spin the strategy of stopping other people from voting? I think this guy let the nationwide strategy out of the bag. They should highlight the part of the memos they don't want them to use in public.

Or why no just blockade the streets so "colored" people can't get to the polls, like in the 1950s?

It's good to see where you stand on this country's ideals of people voicing their opinion by using their right to vote.

    Traitor_Horrible,

You are a royal doofus, and appear quite racist.

That is not in any way civilized.

    In other news,

    Isn't Kid Rock both A) from Detroit, and B) a G.O.P. supporter?

So much for "Rock the Vote."

    Yes and Yes.

Methinks one way to "suppress the Detroit vote" is to have vans with loudspeakers blasting Kid Rock's music at every precinct in Detroit. I know I wouldn't go vote if I had to listen to trailer park generic beer rap rock trash.

It's clear that I'm going to have to reduce my humor down to the lowest-common denominator so that people will understand it without crying racism or calling me names.

What's the matter SamFisher? Still dismayed over this?

    I'm not at all surprised.

Most people on the inside certainly know what happened in Florida, and it wasn't a matter of "hanging chads."

In a close election, getting them thar colored folks out of the votin booths is a sure fire way in helping Dubya. And Antonin Scalia.

A bad choice of words indeed, as the truth sometimes is... does anyone really doubt that the GOP and their operatives will not try to suppress the vote? All the money that Rove's pouring into grass roots is designed to get little old GOP gals to the polls right?

I wonder how many flyers will see that say "Vote on Wednesday" or "Be sure to bring your tax information to the Poll." I wonder how many Dem phone banks will be jammed and how many roadblocks will be set up in Southern states.

Conspiracy theories aside (can we do that ;) )... does anyone really think all political parties are not very aware where their support lies and that they do their best to mobilize that demographic while hoping the less friendly demographic remains apathetic?

Sorry ramblings by an old man. Unless he was suggesting actively suppressing the vote there's really nothing to see here. Of course it does provide fodder for an appropriate 'outraged reaction' from one who has likely also analysed which demographic he would like to see vote. Big mistake was being quoted saying what we don't like to see said in polite company.

    ADDED ---

also -- pretty big leap to make this a racial issue. If Detroit generally votes Democrat -- isn't it logical for him to fear a high Detroit vote --- because of how they vote rather than the colour of their skin!!!

It's conventional wisdom that, in national elections, the higher the turnout, the better the democratic party does. So actually it is an instance where a partisan goal corresponds with a general civic goal.

    This may come out wrong...

Why do people get murdered for saying publicly things that people generally know, think, or say privately? If Detroit is made up of people who predominantly vote Democrat then regardless of their color I hope they don't go to the polls, too. I want my side to win. However, if the folks in Detroit do go to the polls in historically high numbers and make their voice heard then good for them. The democratic process at work.

And no damned body on earth can charge me with being racist. I have a black friend!

"If we do not suppress the Detroit vote, we're going to have a tough time in this election."

This statement implies action and much more then hoping the other side doesn't turn out.

    Chance,

It's one thing to hope that they don't vote, I'm sure we all hope that a big voting bloc of our opponents doesn't make it out to vote. The problem here lies with him saying "suppressing the black vote". There's a difference in not wanting someone to vote and suppressing someone's right to vote. I'm sure he just used the wrong words in conveying what he really felt-I'll give him the benefit of the doubt on this one-but he has to understand why people would be upset over a comment like that.

    suppress:
To put an end to forcibly; subdue.
To curtail or prohibit the activities of.

he didn't say what he hopes will happen
