I have wondered as have much of you probably whats going to happen if we win and are tied with jets, green bay, and sf. Well I have done some research and found this info: Draft positions are determined by record, the team with the worst record during the regular season picks first and so on. If two teams have the same record, the strength of schedule tie-breaker is used which is the combined winning percentage of all teams on each team's schedule for the current season. If teams are still tied after strength of schedule has been applied, the division or conference tie breakers are used. If teams are still tied after applying all tiebreakers or if two teams are tied that are in different conferences, a coin toss after the season will determine which team gets priority. So since we have the greatest strength of schedule in the NFL by a pretty good margin, anyone we are tied with(if we haven't played them) will have a better pick then us.
the place where I got my info didn't have greenbay and sf with better strength of schedule...but cool if we win we will still have 2nd pick..I guess we need the jets to win the most.
I hope the Jets, Packers, and 49ers win at least one game, because I'd hate to see any of them get the #1 pick.
So from the look of that, right now we have a weaker schedule than San Fran? I doubt that will hold up, but that'd be nice. Packers and Jets both lost errr....won today, so we shouldn't have to worry about them.
Don't worry, the Texans won't take any chances. Rest assured that they'll continue to play every one of their starters to ensure themselves of getting that coveted #1 pick...
Nope If there is a tie, it is strength of schedule. The teams that the 49er's have played have a better overall record than the teams we've played which works in our favor. If the season were to end today and the 49er's had the same record as us, we would get the pick. I believe the #1 reason why this happened is because the NFC West is a crap division (except for Seattle) and the AFC South is not as crappy (not counting Indy, of course).
I'm finding conflicting info on this. Some places say tiebreakers are determined by head to head first if they played. John McClain said it this morning on 610 as well.
Yeah, but that isn't true if the first tiebreaker is opponents strength of schedule. At least according to that link posted earlier, San Fran has a tougher schedule than us. Since we are 1 win behind them, if we beat them we would have the same record. If their opponents SOS was still stronger than ours, then that would mean we still get the first pick. I wish we could get some official clarification on this.

December 13, 2005 1 Houston 1-12 .547 2 San Francisco 2-10 .526 3 New York Jets 3-10 .519 4 New Orleans 3-10 .534 Looks like Houston no longer has the weaker schedule. As much as I want to see the Colts go undefeated to shut up the 72 Dolphins it's hurting our chances of drafting #1,
And San Fran playing Seattle doesn't help them eaither. If you look at division games alone, the 49'ers played against 20-19, and we played teams combined for 26-13. One thing I haven't been able to find is exactly how they calculate the strength of schedule. In other words, does Indy's 13-0 count twice (because we played them twice) or just once? If it counts twice, we're in trouble. I wish Indy would lose a few.
I think it goes by the total record so it would count twice. It's time for Dungy to start sitting his players.
Yeah I don't think there is any way we finish with a weaker schedule unless Indy loses a couple, and that aint gonna happen. It's all gonna come down to the game at San Fran. Unless we beat Arizona or Jax, which would pretty much end any talk of the 1st pick.
If that is true, the 49er's are currently at .5481 and the Texans are .5385. This means our schedule is weaker. All games from here out are key, because 2 of their 3 are against our division and 2 of our 3 are against their division. The remaining teams on their schedule didn't play us and the same for our schedule. You couldn't script this any better. From here on out, at least root for Seattle, Arizona, and St. Louis to win and Indy, Tenn, and Jax (except for our game) to lose. If you count the games where the NFC West and AFC South didn't play each other - the 49ers are .6026 and the Texans are .4872, which also increases our odds. Root for Dallas (I can't believe I said that), Philly, Wash, TB, NYG. Root against Buff, Pitt, Cin, Cle, and KC. I hope this helps everyone a little. The Texans will be looking into this too, because winning 1 more game makes it look a little more realistic.
To add to the previous posters comments here is a break down of the nfc west remaining games and the afc souths remaining games(these are key because we play are division twice each year, so if a team in our division loses then we get 2 loses towards our strength of schedule and same as with san fran). Therefore the idea is for our division to lose all games except when playing us and s.f. division to win all games except win playing s.f. AFC South Tennessee: Seattle, at Miami, Jacksonville Indianapolis: San Diago, at Seattle, at Arizona Jacksonville: San Fran, at Houston, at Tennessee Houston: Arizona, Jacksonville, at San Fran NFC West Seattle: at Tennessee, Indianapolis, at Green Bay St. Loius: Philidelphia, San Fran, at Dallas Arizona: at Houston, at Philidelphia, at Indianapolis San Fran: at Jacksonville, at St. Louis, Houston Week 15 Important Matchups Seattle at Tennessee (want a Seattle win) Arizona at Houston (want a Arizona win) San Fran at Jacksonville (want a San Fran win) Week 16 Important Matchups Seattle at Indianapolis (want Seattle to win) Jacksonville at Houston(want Jacksonville to win) San Fran at St. Louis (want St. Louis to win) Week 17 Important Matchups Houston at San Fran(really really want San Fran to win) Arizona at Indianapolis(want Arizon to win) if san fran beats jacksonville this week and we lose to arizona than the #1pick if pretty much ours.
The updated strength of schedule from this site shows that we now have a tougher schedule than San Fran: http://www.gbnreport.com/weeklydraftorder.htm
