My wife and I recently moved the family computer from the kids play room to another room in the house. The computer was working fine in the play room and was properly shut down and then moved to the new room. Ever since we set the computer up in the new room we have not been able to use it.

    The problem is as follows:

After we started the computer up for the first time in the new room everthing was working fine for the first couple of days and then all of a sudden when she was working on a slide show the computer just shut off. Now everytime we restart the computer - Windows will first run a disk checking program and then the sign on screen will appear. The wife will sign on under her user name. As her settings are loading up the computer will just automatically shut off without any notice. This has been going on for the last couple of days.

What could be the cause of this. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Could be a pooched registry. I can give some suggestions, but as with all computer advice, you may be better off taking it to someone who knows what they're doing. I accept no responsibility for screwing up your computer any more than it is now. :)

First of all, I'm assuming you're using Windows XP. Try loading the last known good configuration. As the comp. is booting, press and hold (or for some systems, tap repeatedly) the F8 key. When the Windows Advanced Options Menu comes up, select "Last Known Good Configuration" (6th option down) and see what happens.

If it still doesn't work, try rebooting, hitting F8 again, and going into Safe Mode. If you get in, great: try to use System Restore to restore settings from a previous point. If you can't even load up in Safe Mode, you're in a bit of trouble. At that point, you're faced with using the Recovery Console ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recovery_Console ) to restore your Registry manually. See this article for details: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

    Good luck!
