This is a continuation of debate spun from the Rockets-Bucks game thread. I argue that Deron is right now among the top 5 of all NBA PGs today. Based on the numbers, considering his supporting cast and pre-season projections, and current winning percentage I have a hard time thinking of anyone other than Steve Nash (top MVP candidate) and Chris Paul (more of a tossup) that I would take over Deron right now. What do you all think?

    1. Nash
    2. Arenas
    3. Parker
    4. Billups
    5. Paul or D. Williams

He's better than Davis and Kidd at this point. Where does Wade fit into this argument? AI? Very difficult to classify who actually deserves consideration.

It's also hard for me to group Arenas into this category since he's a combo guard that looks to score far more than he looks to distribute. T-Mac averages more APG than Arenas yet you don't hear anybody trying to call T-Mac a point. Same case with LeBron.

That's why I left Arenas off. I don't think of him as a true PG, helluva a damn scorer no doubt but not the kind of PG that wins with decision-making, assisting/passing, and making other players around him better (the same factors that Kidd and Nash bring). Even though I like Parker and Billups, I would still take Deron over both right now. My list would look more like this:

    1. Nash
    2. Deron
    3. Chris Paul
    4. JKidd
    5. Parker (just barely over Billups)

single game PG? At this moment?

Assuming we're looking for a playmaking PG.

    Nash
    Billups
    Paul
    Kidd
    Parker

If you want a scorer, I'd take Arenas, too.

    All over Deron. He's close.

    Gotta classify "PG" more specifically.

Williams is young yet he has a pretty good basketball IQ and lots of talent to work with in the future. Definitely looks like he'll be a top 5 "traditional" PG in the future.

Same goes with Chris Paul. I'm sure he'll be up there with the top guards in the league in a couple seasons.

Anyways, say all the good things about Derron Williams now because after this series, whether we win or not, we're going to hate his guts as Rockets fans.

Yeah, you are right. Like John Stockton, I will hate him just for the fact that Deron plays for our most hated rival. Thanks for the reality check.

    Arenas ain't a point guard.

If I had to pick a point guard for my team for the next 6 years, I'd take either Chris Paul or Deron Williams. I think they are both awesome. I love Paul's quicks and I love Deron's size. They both have tremendous vision and are great passers.

If I had to pick a point guard to run my team for a playoff run this season, I'd take Nash first, followed by Paul or Williams. I'd take either of those guys over Kidd because of their scoring ability and Billups is hurt. If Billups is healthy, I may take him because of his experience over the two younger guys but they are right there.

If I had to pick a point guard for my team for next season, I'd probably take Nash first, Billups second, then it's a tossup between Williams and Paul. On the Rockets team, I'd probably take Williams over Paul because of his size and our defense and more tendancy towards a half court game.

I really like this list-I really thought about Kidd and Parker- but they should be on there.

Deron will be giving us fits. I really want that home court. Rafer is going to have to bring his A game every nite. Luther/ JLIII cannot possibly guard Deron. V-Span?

I'd also like to mention TJ Ford as well.

Interesting to see Parker on your lists. I remember when I wrote that Parker was a better PG than Steve Francis. I was attacked, mocked, laughed at, thoroughly flamed. Of course, I was right. It is hard to be humble when you consistently make correct assessments of personnel. ;) Incidently, I am right on Rafer now. He must be replaced by next season. (along with JVG, :D )You'll see.

    Right now:

    1) Nash (not even close)

    2) Arenas (yes he is a PG, he plays all his minutes there and gets more assists than Parker, Bibby, Marbury or Ridnour)

    3) Billips (right with Nash in scoring efficiency, better defender than most, and still a great leader and solid distributer)

    Now it gets tough:

    4) Davis (#2 scorer and rebounder of this group behind Arenas, #1 in steals, solid but not spectacular in assists and scoring efficiency)

    5) Paul (tough between he and Williams, see below).

    6) Williams (higher than Paul in assists, but behind him in scoring efficiency, A/TO, steals, rebounds).

OTHERS: Sorry Kidd and Parker do not belong on this list at all. Top 10 yes, but there is no way they rank ahead of any of these 6--not even close. Parker distribution does not belong in this group (and is ordinary in other ways compared with this group) and Kidd can't generate enough offense anymore.

I will say Williams scares me in the playoffs. Far more than Tony Parker does. The more Tony Parker has the ball the less TD and Manu have the ball, I'll take the lesser of three evils (Parker).

Also, if I was drafting/building my team Deron Williams would be my #2 choice in the whole league (only behind Paul).

When did you write it? Tony Parker was overhyped and overrated. He grew up about 2 years ago and finally lived up to his hype. He became a really good point guard who makes intelligent decisions.

I won't deal with the Francis part of the argument cause it's irrelevant.

Rafer and JVG will be here next year.

If Parker is better than Francis now, it is because of Francis' effectiveness took a cataclysmic dive, not because of anything Parker has done. He still isn't better now than Francis was when Francis was a Rocket.

I wrote it when Francis was still here. Even at that time Parker was showing more PG instincts that Francis. Steve was clearly the better all around athlete. Francis was traded. Parker got even better, Francis' career took a nose dive. Rafer will be a back up, JVG will likely be gone. Like I said, we will see.

hhahahahahah, you think smush parker is better than steve francis!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Steve has had one bad year, smush parker hasnt had one good one. Id like to see smush drop 40 in the playoffs and single handedly stretch that Kobe,Shaq,Malone, Payton team.

    Steve = 22-7-7 Smush=11-2-2

    wait, are you being sarcastic?
