    Bell eyes return

Derek Bell spent a wonderful year helping the Mets reach the World Series last season, but this year has been miserable for the former Astros outfielder. And although he has another season left on his contract with the Pirates, he hopes to finish his career in Houston "with an Astros star" on his chest.

Until spending some time with the Astros prior to the series finale Sunday at PNC Park, Bell says there hasn't been much to smile about in Pittsburgh. He is on the disabled list with an upper right hamstring strain and hasn't played since July 3. The only thing positive is the two-year, $9 million contract he signed with the Pirates last offseason.

"It's been tough," said Bell, who will get an MRI on his hamstring today.

"We'll see what's going after the MRI. That's how my year has been going. I haven't had no luck, but I have to take it like a man."

Bell's attitude turns positive, however, when he announces his desire to return to Houston.

"I really want to come back and finish my career over there in Houston," he said. "I love playing with those guys."

I, personally, would rather not see this reunion at any cost.

I agree w/ you crow. I see NO point in us bringing him back. He's overpaid, and we don't need him. Bell is also very inconsistent. He reminds me of the Astros version of Robert Horry -- has some good, valuable skills, but only applies them sometimes.

Derek Bell needs to retire from baseball and begin his new career as a casino greeter in Las Vegas, alongside Mike Tyson and Dennis Rodman!

Derek Bell has stopped applying any skill that he ever had. The only thing he's good for is a few good catches in the field. What scares me is that he plays the same position as Alou is playing, and if Alou is not back next year then Bell may be back...NOOOOO!

I think that 2 year $9mil contract the Pirates gave Bell was one of the main reasons their GM got sacked. Bring him back if he's happy with $200k per.

He can, um, sit on our bench as the sixth outfielder.

Bell's career was finished when he was an Astro.

Damn Bell must be really desperate if he wants to come back here. Does he not remember how everyone in the city hated him for a good year plus?

I saw this article in the Chronicle this morning...I couldn't believe it! I really thought the Astros and Bell parted on bad words...I seem to remember Derek making some negative comments about the Astros and Hunsicker last season. Seems to me the bridges have been burned. Of course, I thought that about Horry too, and he wanted to be a Rocket again for a little while, too! Or at least he pretended he did!

I'd rather have Orlando Merced than that bum Derek Bell. He got booed out of town in Houston, then claimed Biggio and Bags don't respect him. He led the league in GIDP (grounded into double play) because of that ugly ass swing of his.

Merced has been terrific this year off the bench. He's won two games with big homers, and he always gets on base.

That's why there were so many stains on the carpet in the Dome...Bell kept spitting that rank tobacco during games!

He had some good moments for the Astros, though...I remember back in '99, Bell was up to bat with the bases loaded. I was thinking, "Damn, here comes a strikeout". If not that, then I would have guessed a single...Let's face it, Derek Bell had more singles in his career than Wilt the Stilt...

Anyways, he gets up to bat...SMACK! I'm talking about the most weakly hit home run you'd ever want to see. The left field line in the Dome was 325 ft, this ball goes 326 feet. STILL the only grand slam I've ever seen live, and I think the only slam of his career...

sure let him come back and be our fourth outfielder(alou doesn't resign), he'd be good insurance, but at 500k or less

I'd take him back for 500k per year... he was super streaky, but when he was on he could really hit. If they're planning on ditching ALou (bastards!) Bell might make good insurance if Ward doesn't pan out and Lane isn't ready.

If Alou is shipped out and Bell is shipped back in, the 'stros would be so screwed. So screwed. Derek Bell swings at pitches eighteen inches outside of the plate. Plus, he complained to Dierker about getting taken out of the starting rotation just after he got out of the hospital for his grand mal seizure. No, no way we get Derek Bell back in an Astros uniform, no way.
