I don't really follow college basketball, but is this guy worth a second round pick?

    [excerpt] :

    Lucas' draw

Oklahoma State guard John Lucas Jr., played very well at the predraft camp in Chicago. But the 5-foot-9 1/2, 154-pounder's size is expected to be held against him tonight. Former NBA star and former Nuggets assistant John Lucas Sr., the top pick of the 1976 draft, said his son is getting interest from the Los Angeles Clippers, Houston, San Antonio and Chicago in the second round.
"John has trained to be a pro his whole life," Lucas Sr. said. "But guys don't look at if you can play. They look at your size. But all I keep telling him is get in the door."

Nuggets guard Earl Boykins, a Cleveland native, said he felt Lucas Jr., was an NBA-caliber player after playing against him in the offseason when his father coached Cleveland.

"Not only can he play, he's been around NBA players his whole life and is not intimidated by them," Boykins said.

Boykins, who went undrafted in 1998, said it could be better to not to be drafted than selected in the second round.

"If you don't get drafted, you can go wherever you want," Boykins said. "You can look at what free agents a team signs. You can pick the best situation. You can do well one season and then be a free agent. From a business standpoint, it's better to not get drafted in the second round."

Why not take him? It's not like anyone else we pick up in the 2nd round will be any better.

Let's see...in the past 48 hours, I've heard that Houston's very interested in the following:

    Luther Head
    Filiberto Rivera
    Kennedy Winston
    Keith Langford
    ...and now, John Lucas Jr.

What a joke. Looks like they're telling everyone they're in love with them.

Kinda hard to get 2nd round interest from the rox when they have no 2nd rounder. Maybe Sr. meant on the rox draft board Jr was a pity mr irrelevant pick.

No runts plz. No rookie runts double plz.

I was thinking the exact same thing. And I don't see the rockets trading to get a 2nd round pick and pick up a 5'9 PG.

    shut up.

But if the rox were interested in Jr. I'm sure they could trade down to 60 and still pick him up. And with the ringing endorsements from his daddy and Earl Boykins, I'm sure he'd be worth it. All he needs now is to get Mooch in his corner so he'll have some clout in the rocket clique.

or maybe it means we might look at him as a free agent to invite to camp after (and assuming) he doesn't get drafted...

How is that a joke? Every team has been associated with any number of guys. Are they all jokes? Are those teams telling everyone they're in love with them?

Yes, I have a friend who played with them at the now defunct Marion Christian.

This is true. I grew up in Northgate Forest when Hakeem and his brothers lived there before he moved to Sugarland. We used to play games with Taju, Akin, and Afis in their driveway (they had the best goal in the neighborhood) and Dream used to join in sometimes. That was always fun and boy would he talk smack to his brothers.

I heard the deal was the rights to Malick Badiane and a bag of Doritos in exchange for someone selecting John Lucas Jr. for us in the second round. The Rockets are currently holding out in an attempt to get a longer expiration date on the bag of Doritos.

It'd be different if Lucas had 1/100 of Boykin's talent, speed, or strength, but he doesn't. He's consistency underwhelming and got some hype just because he hit one big shot and has so much "heart." He's not an NBA player.

Not too good. Afis was maybe 6'4" and Taju about 6'6" or 6'7". Neither was a legitimate division 1 caliber player.
