I'd say that McDyess makes it pretty clear. Denver has to make some serious improvements next year, or he's going to look elsewhere. Imo, unless Denver pulls a rabbit out of the hat, they're going to lose McDyess. http://www.denverpost.com/Stories/0,1002,90%7E466295,00.html NUGGETS NOTES: McDyess could be a free agent in 2003 if he opts out of his contract after next season. When asked would he consider playing for the Magic if they courted him in 2003, McDyess said: "Oh, I'd love it here. Playing with Tracy (McGrady), and Grant (Hill) will be back, that would be nice, and I think they could use a big guy. I've been (in Denver) four years now, and just haven't seen a lot of improvement. That's why next season is so big. If we don't get considerably better, then I'll have to look at some things." Nuggets swingman James Posey sustained a right shoulder injury during the second quarter and is not expected to play tonight. Denver, losers of three straight overall and seven straight on the road, has dropped 10 in a row to Orlando.
Denver should probably trade him. (1) They might lose him in free agency. (2) Their timetable and McDyess' don't match well. (3) If you're really going to clean house, than do it completely. You want to be able to remold the lockerroom culture without any fight from holdover elements.
I don't think Dyce will be a free Agent anytime soon didn't he just sign and extension when he went back to them Rocket River
He's got a Player Early Termination Option, which means he can opt out of the last year of his contract. That means next year would be his last with Denver, if he chooses to exercise it. I agree with JuanValdez's point #2. In order for Denver to "get considerably better" by next year, they need to make some trades or sign some free agents this upcoming off season. The problem with that is, they have no players of value to trade away, they're not loaded with draft picks, & they have no available cap space. The only thing they have available is the mid-level exception to use, which should be about $5 million. I still can't believe they didn't at least get several draft picks from Dallas. At this point, Denver might be better off just trading him this off season for short contracts & as many draft picks as they can get. McDyess has voiced an interest in playing for Orlando. If I'm Kiki, I see if they'll pull the trigger on this trade: Denver trades: PF Antonio McDyess Orlando trades: C Patrick Ewing SG Jeryl Sasser PF Don Reid C Steven Hunter C Andrew DeClercq SF Jud Buechler several #1 draft picks Orlando is loaded with #1 draft picks & might do this deal, if they think there is a chance that Duncan would snub them again & stay in San Antonio. This trade would give Orlando signed contracts of about $40 million plus Miller's team option of $3.38 million for a total of just over $43 million. That would give them a starting lineup of: C: ? PF: McDyess SF: Miller SG: McGrady PG: Hill If we assume the cap will have gone up to $50 million by then, that would leave them with about $7 million to sign role players & depth to round out their roster. As for Denver, with the exception of Hunter (4 years) & Sasser (4 years), all the players received would have just next year left on their contracts. Thus, wiping the slate clean & allowing Denver to have the maximum amount of cap space available for the 03/04 free agent pool & several #1 draft picks. They might even be able to get Garrity in the trade.
They'll trade him next season for sure. I doubt they'll get what he's worth, but they should get something decent.
I have to agree that Denver can do better than expiring contracts and draft picks. They aren't in the same position with McDyess that they were in with van Exel. That is, they don't have the whole league knowing that they MUST trade and will take whatever best offer they get. But, to capitalize on that, they have to shop him this summer and not wait until the end of his contract draws close.
No, Dice for expiring contracts & several picks. That allows Denver to have the most money during the 03/04 free agent year & some #1 picks to draft or package in trades with cash strapped teams. In essence, wiping the slate clean & starting over. Unless Denver is able to use their mid-level exception to acquire a solid & possibly impact player this off season, it's my opinion that they're going to lose McDyess. I do agree that Denver could get some solid players in a trade for McDyess. I was suggesting one approach that they could take & allow Kiki to put his own personal stamp on the team. However, if Denver waits until after he exercises his option, then they are most probably, going to get crap offers for him. Clutch just posted a thread about Kwame Brown possibly being here next year, which would indicate to me that he's available. If so, then how about Denver doing this deal? Denver trades Antonio McDyess to Washington. Washington trades Bobby Simmons/Courtney Alexander/Tyronn Lue/Kwame Brown/Christian Laettner to Denver. TRADE ACCEPTED That gives Denver Alexander/Lue/Brown as a nice young nucleus to start building around. They'll still have the upcoming cap relief, their's & Dallas's #1 picks, & might even be able to squeeze a pick out of Washington. Would you do that deal?
which is turning out better for the nuggets (howard, harvey) than most expected and not as great as expected for the mavs.
how much cap room in 2003 could we have if we had...lue/alexander/brown/harvey/posey/bowen/andersen/satterfield + 2 top 5 picks + 2 late first rounders (milwaukee/dallas)? any cap experts? (although getting laettner kinda screws things up)
