Broncos cornerback shot and killed in drive-by http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/4437453.html By ARNIE STAPLETON Associated Press DENVER — Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting in downtown Denver early this morning. Team spokesman Jim Saccomano said police called him about 3 a.m. from the scene of the shooting and told him three people had been shot and that Williams had been killed. A little after 2 a.m., a white Hummer limousine was sprayed with bullets from a vehicle that pulled up along its side, said Sonny Jackson, spokesman for the Denver Police Department. Three people in the limousine were hit and were taken to area hospitals, where one man was pronounced dead, Jackson said. The other man and woman who were shot were not identified. Jackson said police were searching for the suspects and interviewing witnesses. "We have no motive yet,'' Jackson said. "We're hoping to talk with witnesses to find out where they were coming from, and that might give us some clues.'' Saccomano said he spoke with coach Mike Shanahan and others in the organization. "Complete shock. We're speechless. It takes words away. A terrible tragedy,'' Saccomano said. Hours before the shooting, the Broncos lost to San Francisco 26-23 in overtime, eliminating them from the playoff race. The 24-year-old Williams finished the season with 88 tackles, 78 of them solo, and four interceptions. He was a second-round pick in the 2005 draft and started nine games as a rookie due to injuries. This season, he took over as the starter for Lenny Walls alongside Champ Bailey, and was second on the team with four interceptions and tied for third with 86 tackles. On Sunday against the 49ers, he had three tackles and returned two punts for 50 yards before leaving the game with a shoulder injury late in the second half. The alumnus of O.D. Wyatt High School in Fort Worth, Texas, played four seasons at Oklahoma State, where he was a 2003 All-Big 12 selection. He totaled 11 interceptions and scored three touchdowns on punt returns for the Cowboys. Chosen 56th overall in the 2005 NFL Draft, Williams made an immediate impact on the Broncos, starting nine times in his rookie season. He remained an off-season Fort Worth resident. Players and coaches are off today. They were scheduled to meet Tuesday before heading home for the offseason.
wow, that's pretty crappy. i hope it's more general violence or targeted at someone else... and not people upset about the Broncos having lost and Williams being the one targeted by a lot of throws or whatever. He was becoming a solid player. No clue what kind of person he was. But still no good, of course.
I seriously doubt a fan pulled a drive by on a player because of his play. Maybe a Raider fan, but I doubt a Denver fan would. RIP
man thats horrible news..... i'd prolly wouldnt know of the guy if it wasnt for madden. my superstar got drafted by the broncos
If you're that rich perhaps it's worth the money to buy armored cars, rich people are always a target. But this is still shocking.
What a world... one minute you're enjoying life inside a limo with no worries, next minute you're gettin sprayed with bullets. RIP.
I have about ten cousins who graduated from this school, and I also have cousin who played football at smu who graduated from this school who was killed about 15 years ago by a gun. but he was into some bad things.
Man is it me or does it seem like NFL players are being shot/jailed/accused etc. etc. at an alarming rate. I know the NFL has 53 active players to MLB's 25 and NBA 15 but stll the % seems so high. Anyway terrible news RIP
