This just seems funny to me...a few years back you would have had a hard time convincing me that Miller would be a GWB supporter.

Miller Emerges as New Voice for Bush Re-Election
Sat Jun 28, 3:10 PM ET Add Politics to My Yahoo!

CRAWFORD, Texas (Reuters) - A new voice has emerged in the re-election campaign of President Bush (news - web sites), that of Dennis Miller, who is gaining a reputation as a conservative comic by attacking Democrats with biting humor.

Miller flew on Air Force One from San Francisco to Los Angeles with the president on Friday, and later gave a stand-up routine at a Bush fund-raiser in Los Angeles.

"I spent an amazing couple of hours with Dennis Miller," Bush said during his Los Angeles speech after Miller's routine. "He keeps you on your toes."

He added: "I was also honored to meet his wife, Carolyn. Like me, he married above himself. It may not be all that hard, in his case. But I'm proud to have his help."

Miller, who was an analyst on ABC's "Monday Night Football, had an HBO comedy show and does commentary for Fox News, adds a celebrity touch to Bush's re-election campaign, much like actor Bruce Willis did in 1992 when Bush's father ran for re-election.

Bush remained offstage until after Miller's often caustic comic performance during the fund-raiser that drew in $3.5 million, most of it in $2,000 checks from 1,600 people.

For instance, he took aim at West Virginia Sen. Robert Byrd, a Democratic elder statesmen who has questioned the Iraq (news - web sites) war and its chaotic aftermath.

Even some in the crowd of Republican loyalists booed when Miller said of Byrd: "I think he must be burning the cross at both ends."

Responding to the boos, Miller said: "Well, he was in the (Ku Klux) Klan. Boo me, but he was in the Klan."

He likened the nine Democratic presidential candidates running to unseat Bush in 2004 to the 1962 New York Mets, perennial losers, and called them an "empty-headed scrum."

He had a special barb for one candidate, former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, who has questioned the Iraq war, comparing him to Neville Chamberlain, the British prime minister who followed a policy of appeasement of Nazi Germany in the years before World War II.

"He can roll up his sleeves all he wants at public events, but as long as we see that heart tattoo with Neville Chamberlain's name on his right forearms, he's never going anywhere," Miller said.

Miller has always been a Republican. I know Miller seems like he would prefer worldly intelligent wordly individuals, but you shouldn't be so skeptical.

I don't think Miller is very conservative at all. I caught his show once. He just understands that Saddam and terrorism need to be taken out, and he bashed the idiots who were calling Bush a Nazi and saying things like "no blood for oil." He hasn't gone done the path of moral relativism.

Fair observation but Miller has always been a political comedian. It's not like he's being dragged out to be someone's puppet.

Giddy...I understand what you're saying, but you have to realize that the other side has had to listen to people tell us that men like former President Carter, Gen. Schwarzkopf, other current world leaders, diplomats, itelligence supervisors, and even former President Bush's voices were to br weighed with no more consideration than yours or mine, not to mention political commentators like Michael Moore etc...so you have to understand our suprise when someone like Dennis Miller is cited as a source worth listening to.

Also, and I personally don't like Democrat/Republican positioning of people, but I was under two impressions about Miller:

    1) That he supported the Clintons ( and Gore for a while?) until an incident happened wherein he felt personally slighted...and his political stance has changed ever since. I could be wrong, but I thought I remembered hearing that, and i think it was from the man himself.

    2) I have thought of miller as pretty strongly pro-establishment ever since he left SNL, and have heard him described that way by many who comment on him in the comedy world. The idea being that you are usually ascerbic and caustinc when you are anti-establishment, but Miller has found a niche where you can be the former while always finding a way to support your governemnt, in the end. Take pot-shots at minor issues, so you don't seem like a brown noser, but pretty much tow the party line on anything big. Wasn't he among those who ridiculed the effort to impeach Clinton? Same deal here...

For the most part, Miller seems to make jokes at the expense of everyone regardless of political affiliation. Recently he has become more vocal in support of Bush (at least relating to the war), in my opinion, due to the bashing Bush has taken from the Hollywood types. During the buildup to the war and into the actual war itself, some of these folks were going on Leno (in particular) and bashing Bush and even resorting to viscious verbal attacks (see Martin Sheen). It appears that Miller started to become more vocal in favor of this particular Bush policy at that time.

Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

i'm not using this thread to prop up bush's stature because Miller said so....i just find it curious. i did not realize he was a republican.

by the way, though...this is taking it a little further than the Dixie Chicks standing up on a stage and making their feelings known...this guy is out there campaigning for the president...performing at fundraisers, etc.

I don't care what Miller thinks and I've always found him to be way more obnoxious than funny.

Miller is as much a Democrat as Fox News is fair and balanced.

I care what he thinks and find him funny.

Now we just need someone who cares what he thinks but doesn't find him funny.

I guess I'm not understanding your point. It makes it OK to care about what this celebrity says because he's campaigning for Bush?

I can think of tons of liberal celebrities who've campaigned for candidates. I can think of tons of conservatives who said they don't care what those celebrities have to say.

no..that's not what i'm saying...all i'm saying is this is taking it to a different level than what we saw with the dixie chicks.

ultimately, dennis miller's opinion isn't important to me...i didn't post this to say, "ha! see you dems are freaks! even dennis miller agrees with me!" that's not the purpose of my thread at all. i just found it curious...i didn't realize that miller was a republican...or was at least enough of a republican to campaign for the president. that's all.

Yes, but it is no different than Barbara Streisand doing concerts for Democrats and fund raisers for candidates, yet she is CONSISTENTLY hammered by the GOP because she is a celebrity.

In this instance, Miller is exactly like Streisand, just for the other side.

Miller was funniest when he was making human observations - stuff like how the Big Gulps at 7 11 have gotten so big you can park your jet ski in them. His political stuff is borrrrrrrrring.

I can't stand it when comedians - Al Franken, Dennis Miller, Bill Marr, et al - decide that they know better than the rest of us. YOU'RE COMEDIANS! Be funny. Make us laugh. Funny observations don't make you smarter, just funnier.

That's why I hate these things like Tough Crowd with Collin Quin. You couldn't make Weekend Update funny. What makes you think you can put comedians together and make political jokes that we all sit back and think, "Wow, how insightful."?

Stick to the jokes about nothing.

I don't always agree with Dennis Miller but I do care what he thinks because.....

    HE THINKS

He thinks for himself and decides his stance on issues based on his logic and how the issues effect him and his family. Afterall he is a rich and white; a fact he will readily admit influences his thinking. That he can express his views using irony, parody and absurd analogy in a way that makes me guffaw giddily only galvanizes my respect.

(he has a wonderful sense of rythm in the use of the Eglish language too)

If you had ever seen Dennis live you would have to admit he has an amazing intellect. He can talk for an hour and a half nonstop without notes. He makes adjustments to his show every night to keep them current and topical and never fails to add comments about whatever locale he is in. ( If the humidity was a little higher here I could just turn into a lichen)

I think a lot of people like the Monday Night Football crowd don't like him because his use of literary references make them feel stupid. I admit I don't get them all but I would rather be challenged by them and have look them up later than listen to someone who has dumbed down his speech to the lowest common denominator.

i agree...celebrities participate in fundraisers all the time...but that wasn't the point of my post at all! my point, again, was merely to say that i had no clue that miller was a republican or that he would campaign for GWB. that's it. that's all. i'm not saying i like miller more today...or that we should all like GWB more because miller said so...i'm not saying that at all.
