More and More neither of them are as funny as they once were In fact, they like two sides of the same coin. Both of them are more interested in Stomping for their political affiliations than being funny or even making observations of a humorous nature So. . . . Who is the better comedian nowadays? Rocket River
When I think of Dennis Miller, this is what comes to mind. <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/8BsOYIgFsIM"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/8BsOYIgFsIM" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
I remember one episode of Bill's show when he was going over the names of mar1juana and one of them on the list was "Bill Maherjuana." I thought that was genius.
I think Miller might be one of the most influential comedians of the last 15-20 years: it's hard for me to look at a Daily Show, Best Week Ever, The Soup, Spade's "Hollywood Minute" skits or any kind of snarky news show or website and not feel that Miller's satirical style on the late '80s/early '90s "Weekend Updates" didn't directly inspire it. As for Maher, I really wish Politically Incorrect were still on network TV, just because I think the traditional Leno-Letterman talk-show model should have been shot and killed years ago. Just thinly veiled advertising for whatever album or movie the guest is in at the time. Is Maher a great comedian? Not really, but a pretty watchable social commentator.
My thoughts exactly. I don't know why, but it bugs the hell out of me when comedians think that the one liners they used in their jokes make for good public policy. Guys like that seem so incredibly self important and I just keep thinking, "Um, be funny, funny boy."
I'm drawn to both, but Miller's anti-liberal stance and Maher's anti-religious stance both piss me off equally... and I'm not religious or liberal, for that matter... I always like to play devil's advocate, but these two are definitely opposite ends of the spectrum... does bill ever bring in Dennis as a guest on his HBO show? I think they would be good partners on the air, a Yin and Yang so to speak
I agree with Maher's politics, especially on the religion/superstition tip, to no end. That said, I've loathed him for years. I couldn't disagree more with Miller, but he makes me laugh, he makes me think, and I can't think of any other conservative I'd rather be around.
Miller lost me when he went off the "deep end." Mahr isn't as naturally funny as Miller, and sometimes goes beyond the boundaries of good taste, if that really exists, but I still watch him. Sometimes, he's brilliant.
Where has Miller gone? I think they're both pretty funny but I get a lot more of Maher than Miller these days. I think Miller takes himself a lot more seriously than Maher does for some reason.
I don't know. I used to like Miller, but it was very hard for me to see him on Bill O'Reilly's show kissing up to Bill telling him that he shouldn't be taking as much lip from guests(in this case a Senator) as did, and then watch Bill respond by saying that he wants to be fair, and see Dennis, tell Bill that he's better than that. It was one of the most disgusting displays I've ever seen.
Miller always came off at too pompous for my taste. And Mahr just seems bitter and angry. Not good traits for a comedian.
I gotta agree. Dennis Miller was a lot more irreverent before about everything but in recent years has seemed more willing to suck up.
/\ What he said. I'm just enough of an elitist snob to enjoy Miller's erudite similes and take great joy in the fact that I understand..uh, most of them. I met him once in Vegas years back , oddly, he was just at the bar right outside the MGM showroom , 30 minutes before a show, No posse', no body guards; all he wanted to talk about was how Houston could let the Oiler's go. He was a football fanantic, before his Monday Night stint. He's stated openly that he didn't become a conservative until he got rich and 9/11 happened. I think he would be more libertarian if the insanity in the world didn't scare him.
I think it all goes along with comedy styles being generational. Very few comedians can stay on top for long. Their subject material just gets old and they refuse to change with the times. It's why old SNL skits just aren't as funny as 'they used to be'.
I prefer Miller these days. Honestly, Bill Maher's never been that good of a standup. Politically Incorrect was a fun show, but his Real Time gig on HBO is awful(save for New Rules which are usually great). Seriously, it's like watching an hourlong MoveOn.org informercial every week. Miller might be a Bush/GOP suckup these days, but at least he's still capable of being funny. Maher is so overcome with Bush Derangement Syndrome that 90% of what comes out of his mouth is a hate-filled rant.
seinfeld is based on bitterness and anger, at least constanza. I like maher, tend to agree with his politics, wish he wasn't so anti religion to the point he becomes an ass to religious people. but I do agree with alot of what he says. I find both funny but I haven't seen anything recently from miller. I do find miller's flip flop from demo to repub to be suspicious.
I could see Dennis Miller going on the Bill Mahr show and it being a relatively bigger event than vice-versa. But maybe that's just because I like Bill Mahr. He's actually been complaining about lack of focus on the environment for years. As far as they both go, they have both always done political humor. to that extent, i think they can be as funny as they ever were. the latest bill mahr HBO special was definitely worth more than a few laughs (heck, it was certainly funnier that Saget's special...which, granted, if you can't do better than an hour of cursing, you're in trouble, but still), and the HBO show can be funny. Opening skit and monologue aren't really, but his interaction with guests is usually good and the closing is great, imo. I don't really watch Dennis Miller anymore, but I'd assume that he has some strong segments and some weak segments, too. Whatever the case, it's political humor. Don't expect it to be something else. If you don't like political humor, you won't like them. I voted for Mahr.
