In a stunning and revealing display during last night's democratic Presidential debate, Tim Russert asked the candidates what their favorite Bible verse was. To my UTTER AMAZEMENT, not a single candidate could quote ONE verse from the Bible. None of them. Absolutely shocking.

While shocked at that expose, I was even more shocked upon listening to the chatter emanating from the liberal blogosphere this morning. They were furious that the democrats had pandered to the Christian audience with their responses! Are the liberals wanting to distance their party from Christianity? They thought Russert asked an 'illegal question'. Unbelievable. How can any Christian support a set of candidates who are unable to recite a SINGLE verse from the Bible? How can any Christian support a democratic party that wants to distance itself from Christianity? This boggles a great mind.

How can they? By understanding that it simply isn't important to be able to quote the bible. Who cares if they know specific verses? I'd rather they be able to quote the Constitution.

How can any student of Jesus support a party than antithesis of "peace, love and charity"?

I suppose my favorite would be Matthew 21:17.

I'm not sure I want to support a candidate that spends their time memorizing verses of the bible....no offense to anyone who is religious, but what does having to recite from a book of worship have to do with living a moral and spiritual life?

I'd rather vote for a candidate that can recite verse from the declaration of independence, from lincoln, from Oliver Windell Holmes or even Henry Theareau.

How about asking the candidates to recite the verse of text that mean the most to them?

Well, when Bush was a candidate he had trouble naming world leaders. So which is more important as a qualification to run for President of the United States? I would rather have someone who knows something about global politics than someone who can quote the Bible.

    A few points,
    1) The candidates should have a pre-prepared answer for this type of likely question
    2) How about the liberal blogosphere getting angry about the candidates pandering to Christians. Does this not concern anyone? WOW. Are the democrats distancing themselves from Christianity? Obviously their policy positions are far departures from it, but overtly they have at least feigned interest in ther religion in the past...
    3) Hillary got creamed last night and Obama looked the worst he has ever looked. Probably needed a smoke.

Except the liberal blogosphere is the extreme left of the party, just as right-wing radio is the extreme right of the GOP. The extreme left can be anti-Christian, just as the extreme right often wants to turn America into a theocracy. I wouldn't be terribly concerned with what either side wants.

You are right. You'd think the would have known to be prepared for this kind of question....it's not the first time someone has asked it is it?

During his first presidential campaign, Bush -- who promised to be the "education president" -- once asked: "Is our children learning?"

All politicians are bad TJ, you'd think you would have figured that out by now

WOW how naive of you. remember seperation of church and state? its not necessary for the president to be a devout christian. hell obama might convert to islam. stop using these little things about them to fuel your war against the democrats. remember, its not what religion they follow, but what actions they make that affect the greater good of the country, and thats what you want isnt it?

EDIT: what if a candidate was athiest or agnostic and turned out to be the most influential president of the past few decades. what now? are you still going to hold a grudge against them?

Asking one's favorite stripper at Treasures to "turn the other cheek" does not make one a biblical scholar.

I thought there was supposed to be a separation between church and state. So what's the problem ?
I actually don't understand why someone would ask such a question to a politician.

Every once in awhile, when I'm feeling particularly cynical, you manage to pull out one of these surprisingly human and magnanimous posts, completely turn my world upside down, and I begin to feel the love…

    <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ylazkYb0_gg"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ylazkYb0_gg" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

Of course now that you've got my defenses down, you'll probably come back with a lib-pig/Ossama Barack/troop hating traitor post and completely ruin my day and send me to a deeper state of cynicism. ;) But you do manage to surprise me once in a blue moon.
