Van Gundys upgrade with NBA deals

(August 4, 2005) — The brothers Van Gundy could be headed for a head-coaching reunion in the NBA Finals this season.

Stan Van Gundy's Miami Heat was the big winner — at least on paper — in Tuesday night's biggest trade in NBA history, and Jeff Van Gundy's Houston Rockets made a terrific free-agent signing in power forward Stromile Swift.

Miami center Shaquille O'Neal isn't quite the player he was in his Los Angeles Lakers prime, but he could be on the best team of his career.

The Heat will miss Eddie Jones, but his departure means Dwyane Wade becomes more dangerous as shooting guard and newcomer Jason Williams takes over at point guard.

The Heat also added small forwards Antoine Walker and James Posey. Walker has his detractors but he's a talented and versatile player who can score, pass and rebound. Posey is an excellent defender and will back him up.

Underrated power forward Udonis Haslem completes the starting five. He averaged 10.9 points and 9.1 rebounds last season. The bench includes Posey, Michael Doleac, Andre Emmett, rookie Wayne Simien, Dorell Wright and possibly 3-point specialist Damon Brown.

The big question is chemistry. How well will Williams and Walker fit in? They've both been reluctant to give up the ball in the past, but they've been around long enough to realize that Shaq and Wade are the stars of this show and adapt their games accordingly.

The Eastern Conference is closing what had been a huge talent gap compared to the Western Conference. Miami appears to be the team to beat in the East, but Detroit remains tough and Indiana and the New Jersey Nets figure to be much better this season.

Houston needed a significant addition to take the final step to elite status in the West and Swift should be the man. He'll take some of the rebounding burden off center Yao Ming and allow Yao to devote more of his energy to scoring.

The Rockets figure to start Yao, Swift, Juwan Howard, Tracy McGrady and David Wesley, with Clarence Weatherspoon, Vin Baker, Mike James, Moochie Norris, Bob Sura and rookie Luther Head in reserve.

San Antonio is the team to beat in the West but the Rockets are hot on their trail.

This is a certainty. The question is how bad and for how long.

I believe this guy just mentioned the first starting line up in NBA history without a point guard. Can't stop laughing (Juwan at the three and Wesley at point guard)
This article and journalist strike me as a perfect combination of misinformation and ignorance

    I like his enthusiasm though

    LOL.

Well, he is clearly an east coast guy.. hehehe

That's one bizarre lineup, but hey, if that's what it takes to get to the finals... ;)

Oh what an epic finals that would be.

    Van Gundy VS. Van Gundy
    SHAQ VS. Yao
    Wade VS. T-MAC
    Walker VS. Swift
And this one is pending of course...
    JWill VS. JWill

It sounds like we are going to have 10 starters, 1 reserve, and no bench.
It'll be interesting how Van Gundy figures to do that.... ;)

Maybe we should put Yao at the point with his mad handles

seems as though he's blindly naming the players in order of their respective peak star power ... just named the bigger names first (baker, howard, weatherspoon, etc.) even though they haven't been good since the 20th century.

imagine how happy he'd be if we picked up payton & kemp ... our new starting five would be yao, kemp, baker, howard, payton with a young mcgrady off the bench

Mutombo should be the starter and have Yao come off the bench. That lineup would've been unstoppable 10 years ago.

The Heat have completely revamped the lineup and I think they are going to have chemistry problems at the beginning of the season like we did last year, to me the jury is still out on whether they have upgraded the team. Man you wouldn't think a team that was one game from the NBA finals would make such draconian changes.
