Without looking at the specs...my first PC was an HP and it crapped out on me. Twice. Since then I've had two Dell desktops and one laptop. No problems really at all, save for the ones I caused by being an idiot.
I've gone through 2 HP laptops in the past 4 years. The 2nd laptop broke after 1 year, I got it repaired, and now it's broken again. I almost went Office Space on it.
I bought a Dell notebook last year. One year later, my screen has gone to crap. I have horizontal lines and huge black spots on the screen. Unfortunately, I'm out of the country and can't get it fixed under warranty until I get back. I had to buy an extra one year to extend the warranty for this reason. I would never recommend buying a Dell. I certainly will never buy one again. My next notebook will probably be an Apple.

For a little extra, you get the latest Intel Santa Rosa motherboard, with a 4 MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB, and Intel T7300 2.00 GHz Core 2 Duo processor. You also get a far better graphics card. I recently got a dv6500t for my son, which is about the same configuration with a 15.4" screen, and that puppy is a screamer for a laptop. And for a little bit more, you could add a few more upgrades. A High Capacity 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery ($33.00), LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-RW with Double Layer Support [add $23.00], Roxio Creator(TM) v9 [add $40.00] to burn your CD's, although you can download free software off the internet to do the same thing (and it probably comes with CD burning software, anyway). Just a thought. I love my son's HP, and always bought Dell before. Had nothing but trouble with my Dell laptop... replacing the harddrive after a year, among other issues. I've had techs tell me to avoid Inspirons, and if I get a Dell laptop, to get their business model, the Latitude, or the XPS. They thought the Inspirons were pretty crappy. My own experience with them dovetails with that.
That seems pretty high for the Dell. You need to look on Techbargains or slickdeals and find some coupons. You should save at least $150 off that price. Also AMD laptop processors suck. I would stick to a Intel Core2 processor.
i ordered this last week and this one is discounted i believed now. This only cost 769 plus tax on this nice laptop rig. Dell Inspirion E1705 -- Intel Core 2 Duo T5300 (1.73 ghz/533 mhz FSB) -- 120 GB Hard Drive -- 1 GB Dual Channel2 memory -- 17" Widescreen with Truelife (Glossy) -- DVD+/-RW with double-layer DVD+R write capability -- 256MB ATI RadeonTM X1400 HyperMemory -- 9 Cell Battery -- Built-In Bluetooth 2.0 -- Dell 1390 Wireless Card -- Windows Vista Home Premium -- 6 USB ports, Firewire, S-video, 5-1 media reader, VGA, DVI-out. All for the price of 769 plus tax
Well i've been doing my research on the processors alone and amd blows intel out of the water when put side to side comparison in performance, multitasking, price etc.... Thanks for everyones feedback on these two models I'm getting kinda sketchy in which one i should choose and will have to do more research on these laptops, the specs that stick out is that HP includes 240 gb hd, 2gb of memory, and runs with AMD Turion™ 64 X2 mobile technology TL-64 (2.2Ghz). Compare to dell's 160 gb HD, 2gb memory, and PROCESSOR AMD Turion™ 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-60 (1MB/2.0GHz).
Did you consider the power usage of the two companies' processors? IMO, power usage trumps. Less stress on components, longer battery life, and cooler running temperature play a bigger role on a loaptop than how many times faster it can encode a video.
AMD is way behind Intel on Dual-Core technology. That's one of the reasons why AMD has slipped so much lately. They put all of their work into developing stronger single-core processors and now that dual-core has taken off, they're falling way behind.
They both Suck.. As an owner of Dell Inspiron laptop and former owner of HP products such as printer etc etc.. They're both crap, HP being more crap.. If you had to choose, go Dell.. Go for something like Toshiba. Or an Mac book. More expensive but much better..
Well i did not consider that at all since 99% of the time the laptop will be plugged. One of the electronic store rep told me that amd heats up quicker and drains your battery faster compare to core2dou. It looks i'll be researching a bit longer. Once again thanks to everyone who posted.
OK....I followed your google search link, and the first three links were to forums where joe blows like us were discussing the chips, the fourth link was a cnet blurb that was over a year old that really said nothing definitive about either chip. It wasn't until the fifth and six link did I find an actual articale less than a year old. Both of them gave the edge to Intel: http://club.aopen.com.tw/NEWS/News_ShowAnswer.aspx?RecNo=9389 http://www.shivaranjan.com/2006/08/23/amd-dual-core-turion-64-x2-review/
Well it used to be that AMD had a definitive edge over Intel with regards to price/performance, and in some cases they still have a slight edge.......otherwise they wouldn't be able to compete. But when they had a true leading edge........this was back when Intel used clock speed to define their chip's performance.......and that was several years ago.
