I have a dell latitude C610 laptop with a cd burner. We had a lightning storm about a month ago and it knocked out my internal modem (yes im still on dial-up). Well I had to get an external modem pcmcia pc card and i just got back online tonight. Well my laptop has been wonderful; no problems whatsoever. Tonight it keeps freezing up on me....but only when I get online. Ive also noticed that its getting extremely hot on the bottom. Does anyone have any idea why it keeps freezing up on me? I had a 1998 IBM Thinkpad that does the same thing and so thats why I bought this one. Well now this one is freezing up on me. It froze up on me 6 times before I was even able to post this. Can anyone help me? Is my fan the problem? Why does it only freeze up when i get online? I really dont want to buy another notebook.

I am by no means a guru, but maybe my response and a bump to this thread might help.

I'm assuming that if you are offline, the computer is fine, and only freezes when you are dialled in? Sounds odd, but it does appear to narow down the problem. Does it freeze and you have to reboot or does it just freeze for a short while and then become active again?

My limited offering is the check the drivers for the new modem? Check and see if there are any updated drivers, and check if there are any known clashes or problems with this modem and your PC. My guess is that there is some sort of clash between the old, damaged internal modem and your new one. Can you uninstall the internal modem? Also, maybe just uninstall/re-install the new modem?

    Hope this helps

make sure you didn't get a laptop with one of those recalled batteries. apparently it might catch fire.

Yeah I have to reboot everytime I checked the drivers and everything is up to date. I will try to uninstall that modem.

My next question is.....how do i check to see if the fan is working properly? Is there a way to check it under devices?

Go into your BIOS and you should be able to see the CPU temp and I think also the fan settings. I don't know if you have a view of the fan to make sure the blades are functional.

With my video card I can go into a small menu and see CPU temp also.
