Better still, he thought of gifted Warriors kid forward Anthony Randolph, who spent the game desperate to slam on Mutombo, going a little nuts after Mutombo sent back one dunk, by fouling him so blatantly on an attempt at another that Don Nelson had to sit him for a moment before he entirely lost his mind.

"We need NBA Classics to show more of the Mutombo games so some of the youngest guys can learn," said Mutombo, 23 years Randolph's senior. "Everybody is trying me. I don't know why. That young boy tried so hard.

"Man, I wish he got at least one dunk to make his day. He tried so hard. He kept telling me, "I'm going to get you before the day's over." It's too bad. He tried, but he didn't get a chance to dunk on Dikembe Mutombo. He's not going to be able tell his grandkids I got Dikembe with one."

I corrected the URL in the post. Here's the text :

    ------------------------------------------

Yao sits, Deke soars and the Deke-Yao Comedy Hour steals the show (Blogging pro basketball with Jonathan Feigen)

Yao Ming was hilarious. He was asked about his sore right foot and he offered one-liners, three in a row, each one better than the one before.

And I can't repeat what he said.

I feel bad about that, I really do. He was way, way off the record with the jokes. But I was not being just a shameless tease (or you might say, a jerk) by mentioning them.

He was held out of Friday's game because soreness had lingered since Wednesday. X-rays in Houston did not show anything wrong, but this is Yao, and it's April, and if the Rockets could not pretend that they were not a bit worried. There was no way to avoid it.

"You're always concerned when it is him," Rockets trainer Keith Jones said.

"Anytime you have anything come up like that, especially at this time of the year, I'm concerned," Rockets coach Rick Adelman said.

Yao, however, was cracking jokes, on the condition they were not repeated.

Good stuff, too. Like you wouldn't believe.

(OK, that really was being a jerk)

This is not insignificant. He seemed so certain that he was all right, he spent the night laughing.

Of course, he had plenty of new material after the game.

Dikembe Mutombo - who at 42-years-old with eight games of preparation this season played 35 minutes in Yao's place - was spectacular, and Yao loved it.

"You can play for me Sunday," Yao "Wally Pip" Ming said.

"We don't play Sunday," Deke bellowed. "OK, Yao Ming. I'll play Sunday, you play Monday."

But Yao was only warming up.

"Deke just wanted to get on the highlights," he said, waiting through a long pause, "with Ronny Turiaf dunking."

Mutombo roared over that one. But he was in his glory. He was terrific in the game. He was the center of attention with the Golden State crowd electrified by the finger wagging. He had the media circling his locker the way they do in Houston when they try to squeeze by to get to Ron Artest's.

"Coming to the game tonight, to tell you the truth, I really had doubt that I was going to get in," Mutombo said. "I knew we were playing a young team. They don't have a big man. They run and shoot 3s. I didn't know we were missing Yao until I got here. I was a little bit surprised when coach came in the locker room to say, 'Deke you are going tonight.' All I knew, if I can go out I would do the things I love to do, playing defense, rebounding, blocking shots, controlling the paint, our team is going to have a chance to win the game. And I did that."

With that, he offered an encore to the Deke-Yao Comedy Hour.

"I'm a little surprised my man took the day off," Mutombo said. "You can take the rest of the games off until the playoffs."

Yao would have loved that one, but he had already walked away wearing a wide smile, looking as if he did not have a care in the world.

I don't think it's a bad idea to sit yao out until the playoffs....only about a week out, and give deke some time to shine.

This is EXACTLY why Deke has to get MINUTES in the playoffs. This type of attitude is infectous and a winner's mentality. It's a take no prisoners attitude that you need to beat just as talented teams individually in the playoffs.

Attitudes like this and Ron's that thinks he is the best player in the NBA, even though he isn't, will take us a long way in the playoffs.

Here's to Deke lifting this team's confidence to be successful in the playoffs!

Deke's play like this makes me wish we had him right after Hakeem man (or at least stolen him away from Atlanta after we drafted Yao). Jesus the guy is a freakish athlete even at age 92 or however old he is these days :D.

A "consummate professional" (to steal a cliche) night in and night out. Hell, the guy wasn't even signed until the mid season point and dear lord is the guy still sharp as hell and ready to go.

I have tremendous respect for Deke.

How does him trying to dunk on Mutombo 3 times = he has a bad attitude?

If you are going by his facial expression then he always looks like that even when he is playing good.

After watching him a couple times, it's clear Randolph is going to be a beast. He's big, quick, got lot's of skills, and doesn't back down. It's really annoying because he doesn't have respect for his elders, but frankly you need some of that to make a name for yourself in the NBA. Glad Deke put him in his place this time tho.

If you watched all the Rox games vs the Warriors you would know that he has talked a lot of **** every game to them even Yao cus to me it seems he is too immature and never shows any kind of respect.
