deke is contemplating retirement because the rockets only offered him the veterans minimum. deke called les and les told him that is all they could offer due to luxury tax considerations. deke is now contemplating retirement because he thinks his play warrants a higher salary and is disappointed in the rockets offer.
That is all he is worth, Deke played great at times last season but I really don't see him being more than a 10 min a game player. We have Bird rights on Jake I would rather have him or a different younger option that has a little bit of an offensive game. I really am intrested in what Butler can do but since we are trying to win a title I would feel more at ease with someone with more experiance.
i seem to remember though that Deke can for small amounts of time...AFFECT GAMES with his rebounds and hustle...I can see us needing that in big games, playoffs, games with injuries etc. I still say we need him one more year!
I dont see this as a classless move by Les or the Rockets. Deke played great last year but he is 41 and with our roster moves, it would be difficult to add him back on at more then what he is being offered. A million dollars extra wont mean much to Deke in the grand scheme of what he has made in his NBA career, but it would have significant effects on the Rox and the luxury tax. Classless would have been to not give him an offer at all, and give him no option to rejoin the team. We all know roster spots are at a minimum right now so the fact the team invited him back says something. Now Deke has a chance to be on the rockets or still has plenty of time to be on another team if he so chooses. Hopefully he resigns.
Deke deserves better money than the veteran minimum! Besides he really step up after Yao went down, he really was phenomenom last year and deserve better pay.
Deke was invisble during last playoff. If we want go deeper in playoff, Rockets need to do better than Deke.
His salary for this past season was $2,210,000. The guy is flipping 41-years-old so the vet minimum has to be over $2 million a year, right? Is he in the hunt for a raise or something? I haven't heard of many 41-year-old basketball players commanding raises before.
It's time for the Rockets to invest in someone who can be Yao's backup for the long term, not just another year. Mutombo was a godsend last year when Yao went down, but unless he's willing to play a mentor role to Butler or whoever else and be satisfied for third-string minutes, it's time for the Rockets and him to part ways, IMO.
no he was paid way over the vet minimum this year. i think its a fair offer. but if we dont have deke and we play chuck alot less where will our rebounds come from
As much as I love Deke, he should be more than happy with what Les offered. The Rockets don't owe him anything like they did Hakeem, and he is not even the player Hakeem was when they ran him off. If he's hurting for money at this point in his life he's got bigger problems than Les giving him a bigger paycheck can fix.
yeah people need to slow their roll until one of the board's cap experts determines just how much "the min" is for a guy with as many years as Deke. it is not 250K. It is way more than a million.
Deke is a humanitarian, a voice for his country...this veteran's minimum is unfair. I hope les comes to his senses, maybe a huge donation to deke's foundation. He has to retire a rocket.
How is this unfair? He's a good back up center but due to the fact that we have Butler now and HIS contract, someone had to go. Of course I would rather that someone be Novak than Mutombo, but that's just how it goes.
