Les needs to go ahead and either commit to Rudy T for next season or begin his search for a new coach now as it looks like some teams are already starting to plan for their future coach. There has been a lot made about the fact that Don Nelson has not been given a contract extension to continue coaching the Mavs next season. The word in Dallas is that if the Mavs would have lost to Portland in round 1 that Nelson would have been history. Now the word is that he might be retained as GM but gone as coach. And in case anyone has not noticed Paul Silas is in Dallas right now and is going to travel with the team to Sacramento. Here is a quote from an article in the Sacramento Bee: As you can see the Mavs are not even out of the play-offs and they already appear to be looking at a possible new coach. Putting off the decision on Rudy T too long could cost us a shot at a very good coach should Les decide not to keep Rudy T.
for some reason i think the decision has already been made. im guessing rudy stays. id be shocked if he didnt. and besides, as long as the mavs always play sacramento in the playoffs, well be fine
I think you have it twisted. I don't fire Rudy before I have another coach who I *really* want...the decision is not ours to make, it is another coach's decision to make. Make a short list of all coaches in the world, get one of them. Not just who recently is without a job. puke! moe and I say: don't settle for best available. who's with us!!
I get the feeling that Rudy is staying. Silas was fired right after their last game. Why would Les wait. What would he be waiting for? I think no news is good news....for Rudy and the PRC.
Did you notice that Paul Silas was ditched right when the Hornets' season ended. Rudy T wasn't ditched immediately when the Rockets' season ended. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean anything.
That's because Hornets were supposed to go farther.....had like most talented team in the East......but it wasn't his fault. Injuries!!!!! The Hornets' owner has higher expectation I guess. Silas actually did a good job....but I guess the owner is aiming for finals....don't understand. Wonder who they will get that will be better than Silas. Rockets......well we are a nice loyal organization. We are all friends. We were a "championship team". "Greatest team ever assembled!" Even though we didn't even make the playoffs and our offense is horrible and stagnant at times........Rudy still has a job. And.....because he has cancer too. I guess our goal was to rebuild and let our young players gain some valuable experience. We didn't even expect to make the playoffs.
However you choose to phrase it is fine with me. All I am saying is that if Les is going to get a different coach then I hope he is looking right now. And while I think Silas would be a decent option I am certainly not advocating hiring him. Like you, I prefer the best candidate period and not just the best one currently with out a job. Regardless of all of that I think the search needs to start now if it has not started already, unless of course Les plans to keep Rudy T.
As HP pointed out, we should look for the best coach not just the best coach currently unemployed. Perhaps the coach is in the midst of a play-off series or maybe he is an assistant on one of those play-off teams. Who are Rick Adlemans assistants?
Well I hope either.... Rudy is thinking hard and shopping and Central Market and designing new plays and actually creating a system for our team. OR Les Alexander is searching for a qualified coach. Who would you like to be our coach????? Besides Rudy...
IMO, Rudy is here for next season. First off, he is under contract for two more years. Second, if the contention we all seem to have is that there isn't enough leadership on the floor and a few of our local insiders (Doc, etc) have said we are going after veterans, it would stand to reason that Les feels they need maturity ON THE FLOOR and not just changes on the bench. If Rudy was going to be fired, I just don't see why they would be waiting unless the guy they wanted was still coaching in the playoffs.
heypee 1000000 posts senior member cc.net re: best available dear heypee: somewhere after the championship years, we turned into losers. i don't know how. i don't know why. i don't know exactly when. but i do know that we stopped targeting "the best" and started settling for "what was left". the old rocket organization would have targeted jason kidd this offseason and found a way to try to get it done. this organization will end up going for a veteran scrub/has been. the old rocket organization would have targeted a premier sharpshooter/defender this offseason and found a way to try to get it done. this organization will end up going for a vetrean scrub/has been. i don't know what happened, but i know we fell off the cliff somewhere and have been plummeting as an organization ever since. sure, we occasionally grab a twig on the way down (yao, steve), threatening to break our fall, but for the most part i think we have been tumbling (nachbar, collier, langhi, kt, shard, griffin). if we're gonna be first class, we need to get back to going for the best. that may require waiting a year or two for the players we really want (ahem...tmac's a free agent after next year). it may require some bold moves (trading a supposed franchise guard). but, in the end, positive results = positive turnouts at the gate. where is our beloved, first rate franchise? whither did thou go? best regards, verse 2700 posts wannabe scout cc.net
Les is the one who started this what, three weeks ago? when he publicly talked about how Rudy was being 'reevaluated' then he went on with the same theme the next day, tho slightly muted. Since then mute has been the (lack of) word. Les is a decent owner who sometimes just has no clue. For example, he has painted himself into the corner twice -- with coaching situation and with arena contracts. It is time for Mr Alexander to start exhibiting the wise insight which made him wealthy.
Jeff, what if the veteran we bring in doesn't listen to Rudy and he happens to be kinda not so smart (like Spree, NVE...). Do you see Rudy taking control or just let it be... I keep thinking Rudy was really lucky to work with Hakeem and Clyder who were both smart and nice.
Only my opinion, but I don't think a decision on Rudy really can be made quickly. I don't know what his medical treatment status is currently, but I think that will dictate a lot this offseason. It will probably decide if he's coaching or not next season. If he's not responding well to treatment, I think common sense will have Rudy himself moving up to take it easy and focus on getting better. If he improves, I think he will be back coaching next season, though for the first time in a long, long time there will be job security pressure. Either way, it makes sense to proceed business as usual, and if he needs to go, it won't appear like Rudy was pushed out/up for basketball reasons, but rather that this was his decision.
