Maybe I missed it, but seriously? Not one thread about today's date? Surely some of you guys have fathers or grandfathers who lived then or even were involved in the events of December 7th, 1941, or the aftermath, ie World War II. Are we even teaching history any more? <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/LZzIetRBiME?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/LZzIetRBiME?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object> I'm sorry, I don't mean to be snarky. It's just important that we don't forget things like this.
My Dad, who spent over three years in the Pacific Theater, used to refer to today as National Kill A Jap Day.
It was 70 years ago. It won't be long and there won't even be anyone alive that was involved. I had family that was involved but what am I supposed to do? Throw a big party every year? It's an important day in history now. That's about it. Not trying to be snarky either. Whatever snarky means. Maybe you meant snarfy. Snarf Snarf!
Now I will remember December 7th, 2010 as the day on which Nero revealed to the world his inner douchebag.
My Grandfather took part in the invasion of Okinawa. He never said a word about it to anyone, not even my Grandmother. Took everything he experienced there to his grave.
Fine. You guys are right. I was just surprised is all. I wanted to just add two cents into the thread I thought would have already been here, and it just looked like people forgot. I apologize for being frustrated. Please ignore the original post and.. just remember the day.
Wait, wait! I didn't get my shot in! Seriously, you started this thread early in the morning of the 7th. If it was late in the day, I'd understand. Besides, different days are important to different people. In my own family, October 3 is the day I remember re WWII -- it's the day that my grandfather escaped from a Nazi detention camp. Of course, I think I did start a thread about that one year... Of course, re The Day That Will Live in Infamy, what comes to my mind is: Today, you remember - I wonder how many Americans remember - today is Pearl Harbor Day. Forty-seven years ago to this very day we were hit and hit hard at Pearl Harbor...Did I say September 7th? Sorry about that. December 7th."
History was made on this day God bless the familys of all those service men and women who lost there lives.
You're not going to make a lot of friends with that comment. I used to think it was a little excessive too, but Japan was developing biological weapons (albeit weird ones) to use against our Western shores at the time. As the old saying goes, when you're in a fight, hit first, and hit hard.
Yeah well, kinda hard to hit first when you're, you know, attacked while you don't even have your pants on yet.
Yes, there is plenty of denying it. How can you definitively say what the right amount of force would have been? Monday morning quarterbacking at its finest... 70 years later.
