Dear Bob, After listening to your interview last night I got that sick feeling in my stomach. Part pity and part disappointment. You made the comment that before we think about replacing David Carr as our starting QB we better have a better option available. You spoke like you really know what you are doing. Your defense of David Carr leads me to one of two obvious conclusions about your leadership with the franchise. 1. You made a horrible evaluation of David Carr prior to the 2006 draft because you certainly had some better options available. Passing on Vince Young or Matt Leinhart without realizing you may need a better option at QB demonstrates a lack of objectiveness concerning his performance coming off a 2-14 season. I can't trust your decision making when you can't see the forest for the trees. 2. To imply now that you would consider making a change but there aren't any better options makes me feel like you are spinning the situation and stupid Texan fan is supposed to feel good about your ability to build a first class organization that will compete for a Super Bowl in a few years. I ask you to stop defending David Carr. Let his performance be objectively evaluated by Coach Kubiak and General Manager Smith. Let them right the ship without feeling like you want Carr to start. I understand the mistake you made extending his contract but you just need to bite the bullet and let the football people try to salvage that blunder. We all know that there are better options probably out there for the future of the franchise, but we also realize you blew the best option by not drafting a QB in 2006. We forgive quickly, so just come to grip with the facts, David Carr has not made progress in 6 seasons and he might not make any more progress. I won't be disappointed if we have to stay with him one more season because we have to pay the price for our errors. But Sage is a better option right now than Carr and if you really want to win now- Start Sage next season. Thank you for bringing the NFL back to Houston, We want a winner and I want us to win the Super Bowl in my lifetime, Sincerely, Rhester
Well said, maestro! Well said. I just hope he actually lets Kuby and Smitty do their job, unimpeded. He said he hired best people he could find who KNEW what they were doing! This year unlike 2002, that rings true. So Bob, let them fix the problems and you be a good little owner and just "shell out the bread." Otherwise, you are going to make being a Texan fan an extremely difficult endeavor. C'mon Bob, you know what needs to be done so lets gitter done! We want a winner before the next decade, preferably within 2 years at worst.
I didn't hear the interview (was it on TV or radio? Is it posted anywhere?) but what do you expect McNair to say? Sounds like he was just taking the high road instead of slamming his QB in the media. I have no problem with that. Hindsight is 20/20. I don't remember anyone besides UT fans pining for Vince and I don't remember anyone at all pining for Leinart. We all wanted Bush. (there's a joke there somewhere). At the time, it wasn't unreasonable to think that Kubiak could turn Carr around, considering his history. I think the bolded part is very telling. Again, I didn't see the interview, but I've never heard McNair even hint about making a change at QB until now. I think that's very telling. Again, I don't expect McNair to drag Carr's name through the mud via the media. I also don't think he's going to go against his "football people" (Kubiak and Smith) again. He's a smart man and I think he's learned his lesson. I have a feeling we are going to draft a QB this year. I think Kubiak and Smith have already come to this conclusion (see the Oakland game) and I don't think McNair is going to stand in their way. Who says Sage won't start? I don't remember anyone saying Carr's starting slot is guaranteed in 2007. If you watched the offense during the 2nd half of the season, you know that's not the case. Besides, McNair doesn't make up the weekly depth charts, Kubiak does.
I'm not a UT fan, and wanted the Texans to pick Vince. If not Vince, then Bush. Could have understood picking Leinart, but wouldn't have been thrilled. Since this is basically rehashing endless discussions already, re Vince and Carr, I'll just say again that you had to be a blithering idiot to pass on Young, based on what Carr has shown since being drafted by the Texans and what Young had shown playing at Texas. In my opinion. Nice post, rhester, but I thought sage was an herb?
I don't believe you. Additional Information Birthday: February 1 Biography: Born & raised in Houston, but have lived in Austin for about 20 years. I've been lurking around here for years and remember "the Mall Guy" and Popeye's big Francis scoop. Wish I had registered when it was CC.com. Location: Austin, Texas. Interests: Rockets, reading, tropical fish, and a bunch of other stuff. Occupation: Driving my wife crazy.
No, I just don't think the Austin location is a coincidence. I know too many Austin based Vince lovers that did not attend UT but loved the Championship. It's an infection.
well put ima...most people would rather burn their bridges and try to fix them later when s#it starts to hit the fan. Mcnair is financially committed to Carr for the next 2 years. It doesn't help his trade value to berate your qb through public statements. It doesn't help Carr's psyche either if he winds up being the only option the Texans have next year and your owner is going behind your back talking s#it.
Oh, you are hilarious. I have close ties to UH, and was in my 30s when we moved to Austin in 1980. You can be such a goofus sometimes!
You know, I do. A lot of folks, actually. Folks who followed Vince in high school, for one. Not to completely negate your point, but there *were* more than UT folks calling for a VY draft. Completely agree, but every one of us wishes we could take that one back now.
Does that matter, if they are UT fans who cares? Or are you saying you can only be a fan of a school if you went there?
We were 6-10 this year. And, once again, there is absolutely no proof that David Carr will absolutely be the starter here next season.
You know, that's a good point. I didn't even think about that. All I'm saying is that I think this team is going to look very different next year and that includes the QB position. If Carr is still here, it will be because of financial issues (that we can't go back and change), not blind faith in his abilities. He will have to compete for his starting job (for the first time in his NFL career) and it will be with someone besides Bradley Van Pelt. And the decision will be Kubiak's, not McNair's. I will concede the UT fan argument only because I'm tired of talking about it.
What is your point? That you have a "complex" of some sort regarding this subject? I don't "love" Vince Young, lol. I just think it was obvious that he was the best choice for the Texans. That has been proven true, in my opinion, to all but the most ardent "Carr/McNair/Whatever" lovers, since lovers is a term you enjoy. The pick wasn't rocket science. The management of the Texans made a colossal blunder. I hope what's his name becomes the next LT. I have a feeling I may be waiting for that 'til hell freezes over, but I'll survive. How well the Texans are going to be doing the next several seasons is a far bigger unknown. They didn't help matters a great deal screwing up the #1 pick of the freakin' draft. In my opinion, of course.
Nothing would be sweeter in my eyes than to be able to win consistently with David Carr at the helm, put your personal hate aside and just think; if there is a QB in the league who deserves to win more than DC I'd like to meet him. That said I'm sure we all have doubts on whether David can do that, I for one hope he can.
I'm just sayin, and I know it's probably unrealistic at this point, it would be nice if DC finally got it.
