I bought a new car. Parkway Chevrolet added on tire insurance for $200 and $100 for VIN etching insurance. They told me I can't have the vehicle without it. Should I have left? They already had $500 deposit for me for a vehicle transfer. It was a mistake on my part to not go somewhere else that had my vehicle in stock. The tire insurance says I can cancel it in writing for a refund. However, the $100 is non-cancellable. If they etched the wrong number on all the windows, can I get a refund? The contract is worthless.
never heard of tire insurance. but VIN etching is a complete ripoff. tire insurance sounds like a rip off too. you should have left.
Sounds like a rip off. I do get tire insurance at Discount Tire and I have used it at least 3-4 times already so it was worth it. But the point is I chose to do it. Not forced.
If by "VIN etching insurance" you mean "VIN etching", AAA and police departments sometimes offer free VIN etching. That's a rip-off. And are you saying they etched the wrong VIN? lolol. That's even better. They're just trying to make money off of you. Unless you really want that car that bad, tell them to take a hike. The tire insurance covers what? If it's just road hazard protection, I think it's still a rip-off. To force you to get both just to get the car is definitely a rip-off.
The VIN etching insurance is if my car is not recovered from theft. After a certain time, they give you $2500. They used the wrong number on the paperwork. It says it's not refundable, but it doesn't even match. The tire insurance is for punctures. They told me to go to Discount Tire to fix flats for free for $200 for 3 years. If I cancel with in 30 days, I get $200 full refund.
You should speak to the sales manager. Ask him if it is their policy to force the VIN 'insurance' on you. There is no requirement when you are buying a car to have VIN or tire insurance.
VIN insurance?? Never heard of that one but not surprising, considering how bad the economy is. Car dealerships pulling out all the stops to keep afloat, lol.
first of all, that's what full coverage insurance is for. Secondly, it costs 8 dollars at the local mexican tire shop to fix a flat. unless you plan on having 25 flat tires in 3 years, you just got ripped off big time.
I don't see how it's a "rip-off" to have the VIN etching for $100...I will assure you that if thieves who do steal-for-parts will move on to the next car if they see all your windows have this etching. My Corolla had it since the get go, and if I paid $100, I'd have paid it over 5 years... so about less than a few cents every payment. Does the Mexican tire shop go to the place where you got your flat?
I'd say fine, if I have to pay $300, than I want $300 off the price of the car we just agreed on. No? Well, sorry we couldn't make a deal, and start walking out.
I haven't seen the details but most likely there is no deductable on this and his insurance has a deductable. And depending on the wording, you may actually get $2500 + your insurance. Still not worth it IMO unless you have a highly stolen car and live and/or work in a non-secure area. The tire insurance should actually pay for a replacement tire if you got a nail on the side and it couldn't be replace. Even then, it's probably prorated though. Still not worth it unless your replacement tires are like $500.
It is a rip off if the dealership tells you that you HAVE to have it as the OP said. To choose to pay $100 for the service is not a rip off.
it's still a ripoff since you can buy a do-it-yourself VIN etching kit for $25, in some cases you can get the service for free. actually $100 is cheap at a dealership. i've seen them charge $300.
If I overpay for something then I generally blame myself and not the entity I am dealing with. For example, you may think $30 for an oil change is a rip off since you should be able to do it for about 1/2 that, but if I choose to pay someone $30 to change my oil, it's not a rip off.
Just because you agreed to a $300 oil change (exaggerated for show) doesn't mean it's not a rip off. But like you said, for the most part the blame lies with you.
Well, he never done this before. But seeing as it's special circumstances and all, he says I can knock a hundred dollars off that Trucoat.
